Some palentoligsts think the spinosaur was actually not as big as depicted in JP3: They think it was a lightly-built animal, with most of it's length coming from its extremely long tail. (From: HT)

    JP3 On 'Daily Show'
'AGant' reports tonight's episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central featured a bit where a (chubby) palentologist started talking about the recent dinosaur discoveries, though half-way through they dubbed over his voice with the disembodied thoughts of the scientist. "ONLY 20 MORE DAYS TO JURASSIC PARK 3!!! OOOHH I CAN'T WAIT -- GOTTA GET CANDY," he thought. "Then they started listing more candy types and more stuff about the movie... I was too busy laughing to pay attention," Andrew says. (Tonight's show will be repeated tomorrow at 7pm if you missed it)

    New Ebay Auctions
A few new Ebay auctions for your consideration: 'Dr. Alan Grant' noticed a few mini action figures by Hasbro, while this auction is a new "Stomp and Chomp" poster featuring the rex and spino duking it out. (Thanks Chad).

    New Site Features
Proving that I too can rip off certain websites, I added a wireless section, a stripped-down version of the site for those of us with hand-held devices who want their JP3 news on the go. Also new is the "upcoming events" box at the top of the page, a countdown to some important JP3-related dates.

    Winston, Kennedy on JP3
In a series of JP3-related articles on Cinescape.com's new website AssignmentX, editor Steve Biordrowski and reporter Eric Moro talked to Stan Winston and producer Kathleen Kennedy about the film. Some excerpts:

    • "It’s really ironic to have Joe Johnston come into this because Joe goes way back with us at ILM," Kennedy said. "He started out as a visual effects supervisor and then decided he wanted to direct. So he went back to USC and got his degree and started making movies, so to have him come full circle in this has been great. He kept begging Steven to do the second one, so when Steven did the second one he promised Joe he could do the third. He’s done a great job."
    • [Any plans to work on JP4?] "You don’t know how tired that makes me just to think about it... I’m not very serious [about a fourth film] right now."
    • "We've actually broken ground [with the special effects] in JURASSIC PARK III," says Stan Winston. "Whereas in JURASSIC PARK I we introduced a beautiful blend of CGI and live-action (which we had actually introduced in TERMINATOR 2), in JURASSIC PARK III we have not only an organic blend of methodologies to create dinosaurs; we have an organic blend in the same shot. You will see live-action dinosaurs and CGI dinosaurs in the same shot. You will see dinosaurs that are literally a combination of live-action and CG—things you’ve never seen before. You won’t be able to pick it out, but I’ll point it out on the DVD."
You can read the Winston article here, and the Kennedy one here. (Thanks Kiyone)

    News Bites
Nothing too exciting going on, so here are a few JP3 tid-bits from various sources:

    • "[JP3 is a] great, big, kids movie, pure and simple, and movies like Jurassic are huge fun to work on," said William H. Macy in an interview with the Canberra Times. "You learn so much about the Hollywood system." Says the author: "Though in earlier interviews he criticised the film's lack of script development, today he remains more circumspect."
    • In an informal poll of 100 moviegoers about the marketing campaign of Spielberg's upcoming A.I. in Fortune magazine, 3% of those asked thought Spielberg's next movie was JP3, while 56% had "no idea."
    • The Tampa Tribune's popular columnist Kevin Walker says, "I hate to admit it, [but I'm most anticipating] JP3.. I'm a sucker for good special effects and 'man against nature' movies."
    • This press release reports Universal Interactive has chosen advertising firm Kovel/Fuller to create a "innovative youth-orientated campaigns" for the company's upcoming products, including the JP3 PS2 game "JP: Survival". "Jurassic Park: Survival will feature a multi-million dollar campaign including a national television and print plan reaching fans of the film and the gaming community," the press release says. "There will also be extensive tie-ins and cross promotions with various divisions of Universal including a trailer on the upcoming DVD."

Johnston on the DVD, Deleted Scenes
In my continuing series of chats with Joe Johnston, I asked the JP3 director about the upcoming DVD of the film, which is already in the works (tentatively set for release in December). I got the impression that most of the decisions on it were out of his hands, but Joe did say that Laurent Bouzereau (the producer of the JP and TLW DVD's) has been working on the JP3 DVD "for some time", and that he has done an interview with Joe for inclusion on the disc. As for a director's commentary track on JP3, Joe would only comment that it's "hard to say" if he would get a chance to record one. Any deleted scenes? "We shot two scenes that aren't in the movie, both very short," Joe said. "I don't know if they'll be included on the DVD or not. I think the whole 'director's cut' thing is bullshit. What got released, the studio's cut??!! I've never understood that whole thing. If you cared that much about additional footage, you should have fought harder for it in the first place."

    New Ebay Auctions
Some new interesting Ebay auctions to look out for: this (and this) is a "JP3 Comparative Size Chart", a 51 inch wide poster of the various sizes of the dinosaurs in JP3. There's also a 3 foot high dino puzzla, a 49x59 JP3 Poster, and someone is even selling the JP3 shot glasses mentioned yesterday already.. (Thanks 'no1important')

    More From Fangoria Magazine
Apparently the article about JP3 from this month's Fangoria magazine is long and involved, as Yvonne noticed you can read an excerpt from the article at the Fangoria website. Here's an excerpt of the excerpt:

"What could go wrong with JURASSIC PARK III?" asks director Joe Johnston, who has taken over the reins of this dinosaur thrill ride. "This film is going to be compared to the first two, and whatever I do is going to be compared to what Steven [Spielberg] did on those. For me, it's a pretty loaded situation to walk into."

Producer Larry Franco is also leery of calling anything a sure thing. "It seems like a slam dunk, but at the same time, a lot of people are thinking, 'What else can they do?' And for a while, we were thinking the same thing."

Ed Verreaux, the new film's production designer, is fairly certain that III will be the charm and, tongue not so firmly in cheek, is already looking to the future. "Hopefully, there won't be 10 of these things. At least, I hope I won't be doing them."

Whatever the future scenario, JURASSIC PARK III certainly always seemed to be on the minds of Universal and Spielberg. "It would be safe to say that after JURASSIC PARK, people were already starting to think, 'This was something special, and we should capitalize on it,' " Franco says. "There may have already been talk about III and possibly IV."

"I think everybody wanted to wait a certain amount of time between sequels," Johnston adds, "but I don't think anybody wanted to wait too long. Four years was about right."

Canadian BK Promo in Full Swing
I've received several reports from Canadians that the Canada-only Jurassic Park 3 promotion at their local Burger King's has started, where you can get free JP3 cups with kids meals (apparently they're cheap little plastic cups, nothing along the lines of the McDonalds JP ones), plus these "Fossiles de Dinosaure en Chocolat", choclate cookies which comes with "glacage gratuit a l'interieur" (free frosting inside!). Thanks Terry.

    Johnston on JP4, Filming
JP3 director Joe Johnston took a break from putting the final touches on the film to kindly answer a few questions about what it was like helming a giant special effects flick, plus some additional questions about JP4. The major question on my mind was about the big 'story' on this film: the delays and problems during filming. I asked specifically about the report a few weeks ago that at one point during the shoot, Joe was "sent flying" in anger. Here's his response:
"When a crewmember gets lazy and doesn't do his or her job, and thereby let's the rest of the crew down by causing the production to slow down or worse yet, reshoot, that makes me upset. I rarely raise my voice at anyone. I save it for when it's been earned and that only happened twice on this show. The first time was entirely my mistake. I misunderstood the problem and thought someone had dropped the ball which was not the case. The second time it was fully earned and then some.

It's the crew that makes the movie. The director and producer owe everything to the crew and I had one of the best crews I've ever worked with on JP3. Brad Einhorn, the prop master, is the best in the business. Period. In the future I'll delay principal photography if Brad isn't available, or if he just doesn't feel like working. Pat Romano, the stunt coordinator, saved me countless sleepless nights by fixing things before they broke and by foreseeing the future. Shelley Johnson, the director of photography, created a world that was far better than I had ever imagined it looking, and he did it quickly. Bob Babin, the key grip, did everything that everyone else couldn't in addition to his own job. Really incredible. Don Elliot, the special effects consultant, pulled off impossible physical effects, including falling airplanes, sinking boats, toppling cranes and enough rain to float the ark. Cheryl Tkach was assistant to me AND the producer. She has four arms and two heads. I could go on for days.."

Prodded about any additional information on Spielberg's idea for JP4, Johnston said, "I can only say that it's such a good idea, I find myself wondering if I actually could consider doing JP4. And then I wake up." Would he consider it if Spielberg begged him? He responded jokingly, "Maybe if all your readers emailed Universal and told them to pay me a whole lot more money...just kidding."

    JP3 in Disney Magazine
JP3 is featured as the "Cover story" in this week's (month's?) "Disney Adventures" magazine, with a very definite-sounding report that "You'll see 10 different dinos in the film, each one meaner and angrier than the last." They go on to rank each of the top 6 dinos with a "fear factor" of 1-3. Click the pic at the right to see a larger version of the page. (Thanks raptorboy2001.com)

JP3 Given Higher Rating in UK?
According to Mark Renwick, the organization which rates films in the UK has given JP3 a 12 rating, a higher certification than JP and TLW, both of which were rated "PG". (There are lots of ratings in the UK -- U, PG, 12, 15, 18, 18R, and A). Whether this means JP3 will be more violent than the previous films is debatable, however..

JP Series Will Go On Until 'We've Had Enough'
JP3 Executive Producer Larry Franco echoed the sentiments of many JP fans in the new issue of "Fangoria" magazine (with the spino on the cover), saying that, "There may have already been talk about JP3 and possibly JP4... Jurassic Park should go on until people say, 'We've had enough of this'. But I don't know if they ever will." While he didn't intentionally leave JP3 open for a sequel, director Joe Johnston also reiterated that JP4 has been talked about. "Something in the works for a fourth film that would be more of a departure from the previous movies," he said. "Personally, I think they pretty much have to get off the island after three." There are also some nice pictures from the article up at inGenNET.

    Davis' JP3 Score 'Earshattering'
Mikael Carlsson, webmaster of Musicfromthemovies.com, managed to secure a CDR of Don Davis' JP3 soundtrack, calling the the score "without any doubt one of the most frenetically dramatic, demanding action scores I've ever heard." Some more:

"I would say that 90 percent of the score is Davis' own. The rest is based on the themes by John Williams - the one used most frequently is the uplifting 'island theme' (often re-orchestrated with French horns joining the trumpets in the melody line). Also used pretty often is the 'pastoral' string theme with its piano variations. For some of the action cues, Davis also incorporates what I believe is the T-Rex motif from the first film, which also the one that closes the first score with that ominous Frenchhorn solo.

In terms of themes, Davis has composed one theme of his own and it's a reflective, beautiful theme which is something of a soulmate to Williams' 'pastoral' theme.

Now, I'm pretty biased as Don is my man and I love all of his stuff, but I do believe that this score is going to be pretty much discussed, hailed by some, and probably considered over-dramatic by others. Nevertheless it's definitely this year's most interesting score so far, in my opinion.

Davis' score is scheduled to be released by Decca records on July 10 (pre-order). (Thanks JPFan.net by way of inGenNET.)

    More Commercials!
Looks like the JP3 marketing campaign has started, as no less than three new trailers have been spotted on various TV channels at various times (apparently the new spots were played at almost every commercial break during tonight's NBA Finals game). 'Buzz Spendus' gives the rundown on the two new commercials (there may have been another as well):
First commercial: Plane flying into the sunset- Raptor trying to bite Amanda- Spino breaking through fencing- Spino chasing group into a forest- Raptor trying to break through door, but group holding it back

Second commercial: Spino chasing group through forest (again)- Spino chasing group from opposite side of the fence (group is on one side, Spino is on other)- Raptor jumping through a tree to get Grant- Pteranodon chasing Paul in the air, Paul is running on a bridge- Pteranodon getting crushed by a cage in the water

DreamworksFansite.com has the first shots from the new trailer online, there's one there at the right, and several more here. In related news, 'HotitalianDude15' reports next week's edition of "Coming Attractions" on E! will feature a JP3 trailer. Video of the new commerical coming soon! (hopefully)

    Winston in Fangoria Magazine
'Slayerett' reports the new issue of Fangoria magazine features our bud the spinosaurus on the cover and that Stan Winston is interviewed in an article inside. Among the more interesting comments by Winston in the article, 'Slayerett' says, is that he reveals the raptors in JP3 have longer snouts, and that only the male raptors have quills (aka "feathered head crests").

    New New JP3 Commercial?
Okay, now a few more people are reporting seeing yet a different JP3 commercial, this time on Comedy Central. Says 'ASH is Groovy': "It's got the spino chasing the whole group into the forest, raptors running through hallways and more pteronodon scenes!"

New JP3 Commercial During AFI Special
West coast people, be sure to watch the "AFI 100 years 100 thrills" special on CBS tonight, as several people report seeing a new commercial for JP3. Apparently it is very similar to the 'Survivor' trailer, but with a shot of a spino running head first into the fence we saw in the previous trailer. (Thanks 'TheRaptor54' and Brandon. Pics thanks to Yvonne).
(Update: If you missed it, several people reported seeing the new commerical airing on MTV and ESPN today.. Thanks Ryan and 'Vader'.)

    JPI Website Opens
JPInstitue.com, the first hint at Universal Studio's new campaign to promote the science of Jurassic Park instead of the movies themselves, is now online. While we heard a few weeks ago that this is just a "preview" site, it does look pretty complete (and very large!), featuring nice sections on "Dino News", a "Dino of the Day", "Dino Gudies", and a "Dinopedia":

"The formation of the Jurassic Park Institute represents the next step in the evolution of one of the most popular franchises in motion picture history - Jurassic Park. A science-based and educationally focused program, JPI has one mission - to provide kids, families, educators and scientists with the ultimate resource for dinosaur learning and fun.

Beginning with the launch of JPI Online, the Institute will, when completed, combine all forms of media to create the most exciting and dynamic forum for dinosaur fun, study, and research the world has ever known."

(Thanks to a bunch of people)
