    Johnston on Newman, Test Screenings
I couldn't help but ask JP3 director Joe Johnston about the news from earlier this morning that Randy Newman's "Big Hat, No Cattle" will be featured in the movie (see story). As many of you guessed, Joe confirmed that it will indeed be playing in the background near the beginning of the film -- Joe picked it because the song "relates perfectly to the hidden agenda of the principals" (namely, Macy and Leoni's characters). I also asked the director about whether or not they were planning any test screenings of the film before it came out. Joe responded by saying that "One of the truly great things about working with Steven Spielberg is that you don't have to preview your movie. Previews are usually misleading and are seldom helpful." Instead, he said, he likes to screen his films for friends, then "sit around and chat to see if there are any holes in the logic or missed opportunities." The people he showed JP3 to, he'd like us to know, were "blown away".

Merchandising, merchandising! Where the real money from the movie is made! Gregg Truscott spotted a few new interesting Ebay auctions of upcoming JP3 products (many of these may already be on store shelves near you, so check before bidding big bucks), including a puzzle, snazzy beach towel sure to impress the ladies, and walky-talkies.

    Buy a Lex Litho
Wonder what Ariana Richards has been doing since JP and TLW? Besides starring in the sci-fi TV-movie series "Tremors", Ariana is also a talented artist, and seems to like doing drawings of scenes from JP. The Universal Studios Store is selling a limited edition lithograph of her "Raptor Vision", a sketched self-portrait from the film, for a measly $150. (Thanks 'Utahraptor')

    Randy Newman on JP3 Soundtrack?
I never thought I'd mention "Randy Newman" and "Jurassic Park" in the same sentence:
'Sam Jackson' noticed the iclassics.com page for the upcoming JP3 soundtrack has been updated with a description, which says that oddly, singer/songwriter Randy Newman's 1999 song "Big Hat, No Cattle" (Hear a clip, in Window Media or Real Audio) will be included on the JP3 soundtrack cd. Newman composed and performed the memorible songs in "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life", among many others, and while "Big Hat, No Cattle" is not an original for JP3, it does seem to fit in a weird and funny way. The description also adds some other info about the CD, saying that the soundtrack will include the "award-winning original themes by John Williams plus new music composed and conducted by Don Davis." In addition, the CD will also be "enhanced" for your CD-ROM, containing the JP3 trailer, a "JP3 dino chart" and photos.

    Pteranodon Teeth
For those of you who will be looking for JP3 to be as scientifically accurate as possible, you may not want to look at the pteranodon's mouths in JP3, according to 'Tango9000'. According to his pre-release copy of the "Jurassic Park Institute: Dinosaur Field Guide" (to be released June 12), "the Pteranodon in Jurassic Park III are shown with beakfulls of [teeth] (no doubt the result of InGen's genetic manipulation)." Tango adds that "pteranodon" actually means "winged and toothless", though that would certainly make them less dangerous and less cinematic...

    More on JP3 Score
Sountrack.net's Dan Goldwater also stopped by the MovieMusic.com message board to talk about his experience at the scoring session for JP3. According to Dan, they were recording the music with a "110-piece orchestra and a 70-person choir". Apparently the CD is finalized as well, as Dan says it "had a crapload of tracks on it and it looks to be pretty darn full." As for the music itself, Dan again comments on how Davis is "hints" at Williams' score at points, though "does use them outright for some of the 'arriving at the island' stuff. It's VERY dark." (Thanks inGenNET).

    Burger King Promo Sheet
'Gallimimus', a resident of our friend to the North, Canada, sends in this Burger King JP3 promo sheet, advertising the upcoming Canada-only promotion of "Le Parc Jurassique III". Lucky Canadians will be able to buy one of four glasses and/or "special dinosaur cookies" beginning July 11th. (This particular Burger King promotion will only be in Canada since Dreamworks has monopolized US restaurants this summer with their massive 'Shrek' campaign).

    Macy on Waiting, Animatronics
Andrew spotted this interview with JP3 star William H. Macy on Internet humor website The Onion, where the actor talks about his career, his transition from stage to screen, and, of course, JP3. Macy comments (once again) on the sometimes-slow pace of filming, saying "we would do a quarter-page [a day, on JP3] -- some days, an eighth of a page. And that would be a full 12-hour day." Whether he considered this a frustration, Macy said, "It has its benefits and its frustrations. Working at that glacial pace, it's very hard to keep your spirits up and your energy up. With these indy [films], all of us are going to be acting all day. At the end of the day, what actors really want to do is act a lot and not wait around in the trailer... I don't think Jurassic Park would get off the ground if it was just dinosaurs. Nope, it's got to have people in it. I feel very secure about the role of the actor in the future. They need us, because stories are about people." As for JP3's effects, Macy said that there really wasn't much acting against a blue screen, "There was a bit of [blue screen work], but, astoundingly, Stan Winston's puppets were in almost every scene. Almost every scene involved puppetry and CGI and some blue-screen, so there was always something we could react to."

    Ebay Auctions
Several new JP3 Ebay auctions this evening, sent in by Gregg Truscott: Especially of interest is this one, where we see the first box shot of one of the JP3 LEGO products. This is another keychain (a gift to the crew from Tea Leoni), and this is a set of no less than seven JP3 crew t-shirts. Finally, there's a film crew jacket to complete your JP3 crew wardrobe.

    New Zealand Premiere Details
JP3 fans in New Zealand and Australia fans may have to wait a few extra weeks to see JP3, but they are reportedly getting a massive premiere August 23rd, according to an article in the Wellington Evening Post. According to the article, JP3 fans in the town of Dunedin, NZ will be able to buy one of 1,800 tickets to the event, which will be attended by New Zealand-native Sam Neill. (Thanks Countingdown.com) Correction: I originally mistakingly reported this as occuring in Australia, Matt let me know Dunedin is actually in NZ)

    JP3 Feature on MSN
This morning's MSN Entertainment Channel features a video clip which lets you "go behind the scenes of JP3" -- the 4 minute clip talks to Sam Neill, Tea Leoni, and possibly other people (it kept breaking up for me). "Alan Grant of course hasn't been near a live dinosaur since he got off that island," Neill says, "but it is still in his teeth. He certainly would not have gone back to Jurassic Park after knowing he had a horrendous experience the first time." Leoni on filming: "We have had a couple of days where an enormous dinosaur mouth is looming over your gut, you know, and they tell you it is on a stop cable ... ah yeah, sure." (Thanks 'JackMuldoon')

Horner Museum Town to See JP3 Early
Residents of the small town of Bozeman, Montana take notice: According to Mr. Showbiz (Click "Daily Dish"), residents of the town (Official motto: "The Most Livable Place") will get to see JP3 one day early, since producers have decided to honor Jack Horner, "dino consultant" on all three Jurassic Park films by screening the film at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, where Horner runs the palentology program. (Thanks Clinton)

    Davis Talks JP3 Score
Sountrack.net's Dan Goldwater managed to corner Don Davis at the recent BMI Awards, asking him a few questions about the status of the JP3 score. According to Dan, Davis is already at work scoring the music, and hopes to be done by the end of the month. As for the score itself, the music will apparently "blow [Davis' score for] the Matrix away". (Thanks JWFan.com and JP3HQ).

    T-Shirt Slogan Explained
'Drakk' sent a letter to FotoKem asking someone to explain the odd slogan which appeares at the bottom of a crew t-shirt mentioned a few days ago. According to someone at the comapany, which specializes in slow-motion effects, the slogan ("24fps is slow motion") came about because "they shot so much high speed camera on [JP3] that the running joke on the set became '24 frames per second IS slow-mo'. Normal sync-sound cinema speed is 24 fps. Much of the work is shot high speed like 96 fps and then slowed back down to normal later in the editorial process when the effects are composited."

    'Survival', not 'Survivor'?
What's different about this IGN article compared to the same article a few days ago? The upcoming PS2 game has oddly had a name change (or IGN made a mistake), with all references to 'Survivor' being replaced by the similar-but-different 'Survival' (I've also seen the game referenced elsewhere as 'Survival of the fittest'). In related news, PlanetPS2.com has posted their first look at 'JP: Survival', saying the game is "essentially a third person action/adventure that's equal parts Tomb Raider and Syphon Filter, with a little bit of Metal Gear Solid thrown in for good measure".

    New Product Covers
'Embryo' wanted everyone to know that Amazon.com has posted a few new covers of upcoming JP3 products, including this new Jurassic Park Institute title, "Dinosaurs Alive", which explores the "dinosaur-bird connection". There's also a nice shot of the significantly less scientific "Dinosaurs Alive: Sticker Book".

    New T-Shirt
    Bob from
Hawaii Movie Tours got ahold of this interesting crew t-shirt, said to be printed and distributed by FotoKem, "the lab that processed the film for JP3." Notice the slogan under the JP3 logo -- "24fps is slow motion" (Thanks 'Embryo')

'Pearl Harbor' Fails to Beat TLW
In case you were worried about Michael Bay's blatant bastardization of history, Pearl Harbor, beating TLW's 3-day gross ($72 million), don't worry -- this ABCNews.com story reports it just won't happen. In addition, it seems unlikely it will beat TLW's record 4-day gross of $90.1 as well. (Thanks JP3HQ)

Early Preview of JPI: Dinosaur Field Guide
A few lucky site readers got a chance to review a copy of the upcoming "Jurassic Park Institute: Dinosaur Field Guide, the first in a new series of JP3 tie-ins about the science of dinosaurs. The book, written by several dino experts, will be released June 12. Here's Jordan Mallon's review:
At first glance, the book seems rather smallish, although it does contain a good 160 pages of text. It starts off with an essay written by the authors (Dr. Thomas Holtz Jr. and Dr. Michael Brett-Surman) called "Why Are Dinosaurs So Popular?" This commentary is followed up by an article on the dinosaurian timeline and other typically paleontology-related topics (including "Finding Fossils", "How to Draw Dinosaurs", "How Dinosaurs Are Classified", etc.)

The bulk of the book, however, consists of what is basically a large dinosaur dictionary, featuring some 100 genera. Each dinosaur has at least one page dedicated to its history, trivia, friends/enemies, and even ‘fun facts’. (Did you know that _Psittacosaurus_ has horns on its cheeks called ‘jugal horns’?) Interestingly, some of the old dinosaur inaccuracies made in the JP series are also clarified, which is something any paleo-buff can appreciate. (_Velociraptor_ was only 1.5 feet tall at the hips! Ahem! Excuse me.) Some non-dinosaurian animals are also listed in the back, such as the pterosaurs, mosasaurs, and other archosaurian relatives.

The dinosaur paintings are beautifully executed by professional paleolife artist Robert Walters, and I think the book is worth buying for his illustrations alone. If not that, then perhaps some of the readers might enjoy looking at some of the screen shots taken from the JP movies, including the upcoming Jurassic Park 3 film. Most interestingly, the Field Guide also contains a ‘free dinosaur poster’ inside! It’s basically an illustrated list of all the dinosaurs in the book and features the Jurassic Park Institute logo at the top.

At any rate, that’s about it review-wise. The back of the book lists a website to go to if you’re looking to ‘begin an adventure of a lifetime.’ It can be found at www.jpinstitute.com, although it is not yet open to the public (I tried!).

Overall, I’d say this book is easily one of the most accurate and up-to-date works for children, although I would think that even most adults would enjoy this one too. It’s not clichéd like some of the older dinosaur books, and I feel it’s well worth the $10.99 pricetag.

    Game Boy Advance Previews
Pocket.ign.com got their hands on all three upcoming JP3 games for Nintendo's GBA system, posting short reviews and pics from each. Interestingly, IGN reports "each title is under development at different production houses, insuring that each game will be a fresh take on the movie license." Here's a look at JP3: Primal Fear, which IGN calls "a tense, action-packed adventure game set in an isometric perspective." In JP3: Park Builder, players can "find DNA strands throughout the game to create new dinosaurs" and then "trade DNA to each other [using the link cable] to complete their collection more quickly." JP3: DNA Factor is a "traditional side-scrolling game with a few puzzles thrown in for good measure." (Thanks 'Dinosaur_neill')

    New JP3 Theater Display Spotted
Nate wrote in to say that he spotted a JP3 standee last night at his local theater, which he describes as "HUGE -- at least 8 or 10 feet tall, and 16 to 18 feet long. It was made of a thick cardboard and it was just a huge image like the new posters that are out, with the JP3 logo and then the wing span of the [pteranodon] across it. It was awesome, that was all there was too it, but it looked like from a distance that there actually could be a dino flying over head and that was the actual shadow it was casting, that is how big this thing is. The display was in 4 panels, and it had the sturdy supports in the back of it to hold the beast up. All I can say is I will be waiting in line to take this home the moment they want to throw it away, the only problem is, I dont think I have any where to put it, more over a car or van large enough to bring it home! "
