    JP/TLW DVD Information
Jeff Budzynski directed my attention to this thread on the Home Theater Forum website, which contains some info on the upcoming JP/TLW DVD's from people are apparently "in the know" in the DVD industry. According to one poster, JP and TLW will be packaged together for release late this year, and JP will get the SE (special edition) treatment (meaning it will have all kinds of extras). Posters also speculated about whether or not Spielberg would do a commentary, saying that in the past Spielberg has said that he really doesn't like doing them, and pointing to the directors especially busy schedule lately. However, according to the poster, Spielberg's "participation in..making..his work [available] on DVD has increased."

JP3 to Feature Music by Rocker "Bono"
Bono, frontman for the infamous U2, will be composing and performing several songs for the third JP3 movie, according to the IMdb. Bono, who has just finished work on the upcoming film, The Million Dollar Hotel, decided to take on the project when director Joe Johston contacted him saying that he wanted JP3 to appeal to a broader demographic, and music by Bono would do just that. Johnston also says that a MTV Music Video is in production, and will feature "lots of dinosaurs!".

Johnston Talks About Cast, Script, Plot "Problems"
Dark Horizons is reporting today that JP3 director Joe Johnston spoke with "Moviz 2000" magazine about the status of the film, clearing up some rumors and providing some new info while he's at it. Here's the info, from a scooper named "George":
Director Joe Johnston talked recently with Moviz 2000 magazine and discussed the current status of the next JP movie. Shooting will now take place on the Hawaiian island of Maui instead of New Zealand as some have speculated. The rumours of Helen Hunt and Elizabeth Hurley being cast in the movie have been denied, while Chris Klein's involvement in "Rollerball" means he's no longer a part of the production. What about the script? Johnston says "The script is being rewritten by William Goldman because of some minor problems with the plot. You asked me about the plot, and all I can say is that it isnt a prequel to the first movie, but a new and more independent story which stands alone. Expect more dinosaurs and more plot!". Meanwhile one name not mentioned that has popped up on the rumour cycle is none other than Kathleen Turner who is apparently being considered for a part."
Some additional info: Oscar Award-winning writer William Goldman is described as "one of the most successful screenwriters and script doctors in Hollywood", and has more than 20 writing credits to his name, winning the Oscar in 1970 for his screenplay of Buch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and again in 1977 for All the President's Men. More recently, Goldman wrote The Ghost in the Darkness, The General's Daughter, and the film released the same day as Jurassic Park in 1993, Last Action Hero. He's also the guy behind my girlfriend's favorite film, The Princess Bride. Hopefully he can help the plot "problems" Johnston speaks about above. (Thanks again to Ryan Salmon).

    JP3 Teaser?
The film news/rumor site Corona's Coming Attractions posted a scoop today on their JP3 page about a rumored JP3 teaser trailer. Here's the info from "Quince".. Warning, potential (albeit unconfirmed) spoliers below:
"I work at a post-production house in London, England. Over the weekend I came across a package from Los Angeles inscribed with 'Teaser: JP'. Inside was a storyboard for what seemed to be a movie trailer for the new Jurassic Park sequel. The sketches and screen directions were as followed:

The camera pulls out from behind a tree to reveal a beach and exotic flora (Much like the intro to the second JP). The camera slowly track-pans 45 degrees until it hangs over the water. Behind the deep plants two slim, long reptilian tails can be seen bobbing and swinging about. The storyboard indicates that we can only hear the dinosaurs 'squawking', we don't actually see them whole. The camera tracks backwards, slowly pushing back from the playful dinos, creeping steadily out to sea. Our attention is still locked firmly on the tails.

Suddenly a massive Loch Ness monster type head (I think it's meant to be plesiosaurs but aren't sure) bursts out of the water and swallows the camera. I guess that this effect is meant to startle you because it says underneath 'Swallows with extreme force and anger'. The title JP burns on to the screen.

I'm not sure whether other special effects houses in London or America have been sent the same storyboard because last year we got sent the Sleepy Hollow [trailer]"

No other details, including a release date of the teaser, were provided. Thanks to fanogas and Ryan Salmon.

BBC Dino Documentary on Discovery Channel
Before I forget to mention it, set your VCR's for April 16, the date the BBC's celebrated documentary series, "Walking With Dinosaurs" will start in the US. Each 30 minute episode (there are 6 in total) will air on The Discovery Channel, with a DVD of the series being released two days later, on April 18. The series was a phenomenal success in England when it aired last year (garnering 51% of the audience share), with each episode dealing with a different era of dinosaur life on Earth. While the visual effects in the series reportedly aren't quite as dazzling as those in the JP movies, they are still very good by television standards.

One More Bit of Potter News
I know I shouldn't report on this since it really has nothing to do with JP, especially now that Spielberg has bailed from the project, but what the hey -- E! Online is reporting today that writer/director Chris Columbus (writer of Gremlins and The Goonies, and director of Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and most recently the horrid Bicentennial Man) will direct the upcoming Harry Potter Movie.

    JP DVD News
Some new information about the upcoming Jurassic Park DVD, which was announced in December. According to VideoStoreMag.com, Universal is planning a mid-summer release for the film (no word on the release date of The Lost World), and while the company "wouldn't reveal supplemental details", the site says that the DVD is "expected to include step-by-step computer animation storyboards, deleted scenes, and a director's commentary by Spielberg himself." If this news is correct, JP will be the first commentary that the director has done. (Thanks CyberD)

    "Minority Report" to Begin Production
Not to be outdone by yesterday's announcement, Dreamworks said today that despite rumors, Spielberg will be directing "Minority Report", the sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise, with production starting a little over a year from now, in April 2001. Details are available here.

    Spielberg to direct Kubrick's "A.I."
An idea for a movie about artificial intelligence by the late Stanley Kubrick will finally be realized by everyone's favorite dino director, Steven Spielberg. According to a press release sent out this evening, Spielberg will write and direct the film, with production starting on July 10. Jan Harlan, brother-in-law of Kubrick, said that "during preparations for `A.I.,' Stanley came to realize that Steven would actually be the ideal director for the project, and I know they talked extensively about a collaboration."

    Rowling/Spielberg Controversy!
More information today from the IMDB about the reasons Spielberg (who received the lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild of America this weekend, btw) decided not to direct the movie version of Harry Potter, a film he was obviously very excited about. According to the London Sunday Express, Spielberg bailed because of "creative differences" with Potter author J.K. Rowling. Supposedly, Rowling wanted full creative control over the film, and scoffed at Spielberg's "more fanciful vision". Brad Silberling (Casper and City of Angels) is now said to be taking Spielbergs place. Funny how the world works: Two years ago, J.K. Rowling didn't have a penny to her name. Now she's fighting with the world's most popular movie director.

    Unsubstantiated Rumor Dept.
Add the name "Mandy Frost" to the list of rumored cast members of JP3, according to Alan Soper. He says the "singer/actress newcomer" (whom I can't find, even in the IMdb) was mentioned as auditioning for a role in the film in "On Location" magazine.

Helen Hunt, Elizabeth Shue Rumored as Casting Additions
According to Dave, the morning newspaper in New Zealand had an article today on the third JP movie, mentioning how Fiordland has been scouted as a location for the film, and adding that Wellington was considered as well. However, most interestingly is this bit:

    New Dinosaur Trailer
Those of you interested in the upcoming Disney movie, Dinosaur (and who isn't?) should check out the official site, as a new trailer has been posted, this one with a clip of the dinosaurs talking. It'll be interesting to see if Disney can pull of a talking-dino movie without having it feel like yet another installment in The Land Before Time series.

    Spielberg Drops "Harry Potter"
Well, this just stinks. According to this Reuters story released this morning, Steven Spielberg has decided not to direct the rumored "Harry Potter" Movie. Despite reports recently that said he was attached to direct, Spielberg said that, "I have every certainty that the series of Harry Potter movies will be phenomenally successful. J.K. Rowling's vision of Harry Potter is modern genius. Warner Bros. and [President] Alan Horn have been more than generous in the time they've allowed me to make a decision." Accoring to the release, Warner Brothers is still currently planning on releasing the film in Summer 2001, though without Mr. Spielberg.

    Hasbro to Produce JP3 Toys
According to this press release, toy-maker Hasbro is gearing up once again to produce a line of toys for JP3. Company executives hope that JP3 sales will boost their earnings this year, as if they aren't already swimming in dough from the success of Pokemon and Star Wars: Episode 1. (Thanks to BJPE1)

    Universal Likes Registering Domains
While looking through the good ol' Network Solutions WHOIS database, I noticed that Universal Studios sure likes registering domains. Remember the news bit that they signed up for "jurassicparkextinction.com" awhile back (see news below)? Well, they've secured several other domains as well. Here's a list:
    • jurassicparkstore.com - Registered Nov 23
    • jurassicparkdinos.com - Registered Dec 15
    • jurassicparkextinction.com - Registered Dec 16
    • jurassicparkinstitute.com - Registered Dec 16
    • jurassicparkembryo.net - Registered Dec 29
    • jurassicpark-embryo.com - Registered Dec 29
So does this mean that JP3 will be subtitled "Embryo" or "Extinction" as has been rumored for over a year? Personally, I belive Universal heard the rumors and secured the domains "just in case". Of course, your guess is as good as mine...

    Site News
Well, the site is up and running, and I'm very happy with the results. I've just added a little "Hosted" box with quick links to some of the sites that are being hosted on the server so far. So if you have a movie or JP-related site that is currently being hosted on one of those crappy hosting services, or would like to make a new web site, fill out the form and I'll consider you for an account.
