    Doom II (Part 2)
    By Aragorn

INT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON - ENTRYWAY

Double doors retract with a groan. Arlene replaces her keycard and trudges into the dark hall, slumping down. The lights in this hall are either burnt out, or flickering, creating some areas to be pitch black while others are lit up like a strobe light.

    YOSHIDA
    Sergeant, I'm sorry.

She waves him away. Taggart approaches a barred door and looks into the massive cell block. The lights seem to be working fine in the Cell block beyond.

    TAGGART
    Roomy.

    YOSHIDA
We've had a lot of problems with personnel.

    TAGGART
    Deserters?

    YOSHIDA
Men tend to lose their minds out here.

    TAGGART
I saw you in the infirmary, right?

    YOSHIDA
    Yes sir. PFC Midori Yoshida.

    TAGGART
You were saying something about me when I woke up.

    YOSHIDA
I'm a...a spiritual liaison for the Corps. I was trying to see what happened to you during your time in Hell.

    TAGGART
So I really was kicking around in the netherworld with those goons, huh? You know what they did to me?

    YOSHIDA
    You're soulless.

    TAGGART
    Come again?

    YOSHIDA
It's not just your memory that's fractured.

    ARLENE
    That's enough.

She slides back the barred door and points her shotgun into the darkness.

    ARLENE
    We're wasting time.

INT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON - CELL BLOCK

Taggart and Arlene survey the empty cells as they proceed side-by-side.

    TAGGART
Look, I'm sorry about the doc.

    ARLENE
    It comes with the job.

    TAGGART
    I tried to save him.

    ARLENE
    Forget it.

Something shifts in the dark corner of a cell. Arlene scans her card and the door swings open.

    ARLENE
    Come out of there. Slowly.

A man in prison garb shuffles forward - his mouth stained with blood, his eyes pure white. Arlene raises the shotgun, but the zombie jerks it from her grip. Taggart shoves her aside and blasts the prisoner's chest open. The zombie backpedals into the rear of the cell, where he takes two more hits, losing a gallon of entrails before crumpling to the floor.

Arlene grabs her gun and stands over the corpse.

    ARLENE
They can do this to our men?

She shoots it in the head, then the back, then the groin, breaking down in tears again. Taggart rushes to support her.

    TAGGART
    Stop it! Conserve your ammo!

    ARLENE
Do you think they'll do that to Wilhelm?!

    TAGGART
I...I don't know. If he was where I think he was out there, there’s not much left of him to take over. Let’s hope that’s the case.

    YOSHIDA
    Um, guys?

They turn to look at him and Yoshida nods towards a large crowd of zombified inmates stepping out of their open cells and into the hall. Taggart runs from the cell, catching two of the inmates with a single shot. Yoshida and Arlene open fire, taking a few others down as well. They fall, unnoticed, into the zombie ranks.

    TAGGART
    Up!

He grabs a cell wall and climbs upwards toward the second level. Yoshida starts to climb, but is snagged by the zombies and pulled back down. Arlene shoots an inmate and grabs Yoshida, practically throwing him onto the wall.

    ARLENE
    Up!

Taggart slings himself onto the second-level walkway and fires down into the crowd, taking down another couple zombies. He reaches down to help Yoshida up from the bars.

On her way up, Arlene kicks a snarling undead in the face and tries to regain her footing, but slips. She catches the bars with both hands, but that causes her to drop her shotgun into the crowd below. The zombies grab both her legs and begin to pull.

    ARLENE
    Flynn!

He stretches his hand toward her, but it doesn't even come close. Taggart climbs onto the railing and hangs upside down from it. He’s still out of reach of Arlene, but not by as much.

    TAGGART
I need you to climb, Arlene!

The zombies have a firm grip on her ankles. She grits her teeth and pulls as hard as she can. No luck.

    TAGGART
    Damn you, motherfuckers!

A rifle shot cracks across the cell block. One of Arlene's legs is suddenly freed. Taggart glances upward and sees across the block, a Marine crouched on the third level with a sniper rifle.

The Marine takes careful aim and squeezes the trigger once more. Arlene's other foot pulls free. Taggart grabs her hands tightly.
    TAGGART
    Gotcha.

He pulls her up and the two of them collapse on the second-level walkway.

    SNIPER
You're not safe down there, soldier!

    TAGGART
    Thanks for the tip, ace!

They hurry towards a nearby flight of stairs.

INT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON - STRONGHOLD

The sniper leads them into a small room and bolts the door. Three other men are sitting atop a small cache of firepower.

    SNIPER
I'm Sergeant Gallatin. These are the few of my men that managed to survive the initial invasion.

    TAGGART
All of the inmates are gone?

    GALLATIN
We pulled one out, but she's not gonna be any help.

He motions toward a closet door and one of the other Marines pulls it open. Inside sits a fiery young redhead with her arms and legs in iron shackles.

    TAGGART
C'mon Warden, take the shackles off. We’re all in this together.

    GALLATIN
I told you, she's of no use to us.

    TAGGART
    What's your name, sunshine?

    INMATE
    Dardier. Tij Dardier. PFC.

    TAGGART
    What're you in for?

She looks away. Gallatin purses his lips.

    GALLATIN
    Assaulting a superior officer.

A grin spreads across Taggart's face, remembering when he did that exact same thing.

    TAGGART
    Let her out.

    GALLATIN
Who put you in charge...(looks at Taggart's stripes)...Corporal?

    TAGGART
Considering I've dealt with these demons before, I'd say they did.

    GALLATIN
So you're the one everyone’s been talking about.

He pulls a rag from his pocket and wipes down the scope of his rifle until it glistens like his bald head.

    GALLATIN
Aren’t you supposed to have amnesia or something?

    YOSHIDA
I might be able to help with that.

All eyes turn to Yoshida as he waves meekly from the corner.

    YOSHIDA
I think they cast some sort of veil over your memory. I might be able to remove it if given enough time.

    GALLATIN
    Is this guy for real?

    ARLENE
Yeah, he is. Got a problem with that?

    Gallatin remains silent.

    YOSHIDA
It's worth a shot. Better chance then doing nothing.

Taggart sits down on top of a table and cracks his knuckles.

    TAGGART
    Sure, kid. Go nuts.

Yoshida steps forward and places his fingertips on either side of Taggart's face. Gallatin smirks at his men, who all chuckle. Arlene watches intently. Closing his eyes, Yoshida whispers something inaudible. Gallatin sighs with frustration as he gets up and leaves the room.

    ZOOM IN
on Taggart's tightly-shut eyes - they snap open with sudden clarity.

    SMASH CUT
through a montage of his memories:

Wielding a chainsaw against a zombie PFC; Calling out to an enormous half-human spider; Slipping his arm into the BFG 9000; Being stabbed through the throat by the hideous Arch
    Vile.

Taggart leaps away from Yoshida with a gasp, grabbing his neck. Yoshida smiles.

    YOSHIDA
    It worked.

    TAGGART
    No shit, Sherlock!

He stares blankly at the others for a moment, then his eyes settle on Arlene.

    TAGGART
They killed me. They killed me and brought me back.

    YOSHIDA
They still have your soul, Corporal.

    TAGGART
Well, do I need it? Seems like it was just weighing me down anyway.

Yoshida shrugs. Taggart swoons as his mind continues to expand.

    TAGGART
    Oh, no...

    ARLENE
    What is it?

    TAGGART
They used me. They fucking used me! (slams his fist against the tabletop.) They sent me through your Gate as a distraction while they came around the back in that Hellship of theirs.

    ARLENE
Where did they come from? How did they do it without using the
    Gateway?

    TAGGART
They have their own. Dozens of them, all shapes and sizes. They built 'em themselves.

    ARLENE
    How?!

    TAGGART
    We showed them how.

He walks over to one of Gallatin's men.

    TAGGART
I need a new gun, now.

    SOLDIER
    These are ours.

Without responding, he throws the guy into the wall and picks up a chaingun laying nearby.

    TAGGART
Didn’t momma ever teach you to share? (to another soldier) Remove the prisoner's restraints.

    Tij Dardier smiles.

INT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON - WATCHTOWER

Gallatin surveys Io's battlefield through binoculars. It wouldn't really be fair to call it a battlefield; the rest of the human population has been massacred and it would appear that the demons are attempting to turn IO into another Hell.

Arlene enters through a trapdoor in the floor.

    GALLATIN
    What do you want?

    ARLENE
We're downstairs discussing how to beat these things.

    GALLATIN
I believe in God, and faith. I believe in purpose.

Gallatin lowers the binoculars and watches as Cacodemons in the distance spit lightning at twitching bodies.

    GALLATIN
I believe we're going to die here, Sergeant.

    ARLENE
    We're the last…

    GALLATIN
(cutting her off) You think that means anything? Just because we're the last? Somebody has to be the last. They'll get to us sooner or later.

    ARLENE
And then what? We just give up?

    GALLATIN
The Lord will sort it out.

    ARLENE
The Lord's not here, Sergeant Gallatin. We are.

Taggart and Tij ascend into the tower. Gallatin turns to see them

    GALLATIN
You've gotta be fuckin’ kidding me.

    TAGGART
Anyone who can fire a gun deserves a chance to live through this.

Gallatin laughs wildly and draws his sidearm, tossing it to Tij.

    TIJ
    I've got my own, thanks.

She hefts a double shotgun and winks at him.

    GALLATIN
    Where are my men?

    TAGGART
    Downstairs, awaiting your orders.

    GALLATIN
I suppose we shouldn't let all these bullets go to waste.

    TAGGART
    S'pose not.

INT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON - STRONGHOLD

Gallatin and Arlene spread a stack of blueprints over the table.

    ARLENE
    Why are they here, Flynn?

    TAGGART
They need to learn more of our technology before they can take a
shot at the big enchilada. That's Earth for those of you who don't speak Spanish.

    ARLENE
So if we shut down the CPU core, that'll erase any information they might be after. Fuck their shit right up.

    GALLATIN
You mean shut down half the base? The atmospheric converters?

    TAGGART
This is about Earth now. Everything else is only secondary. How do we get to the CPU?

    ARLENE
    Through the Toxin Refinery.

Taggart turns to load the chaingun.

    GALLATIN
    That's it then?

    ARLENE
    That's it.

EXT. IO COMPLEX - PRISON WALL - DAY

The Marines move stealthily atop the stone wall that forms the prison perimeter. Gallatin winces as he brushes against a coil of razor wire. They can make a leap from the wall to the rooftop of a huge warehouse, but first, they'll have to deal with the two Cacodemons who descend from the sky.

Taggart opens fire with the chaingun under one of the creatures, blue blood raining down on him as he chews into its soft meat. The Cacodemon groans and sends a bolt of lighting into the chest of one of Gallatin's men. The soldier is shoved off the wall by the blast and spirals through the air, coming down and getting impaled on the razor wire with a final scream.

Gallatin drops to one knee and glares through his rifle scope. He spears the Cacodemon's only eye with a single bullet, however the creature still lives. The second Cacodemon picks up another of Gallatin's men and swallows him whole, belching up a lightning ball. Tij takes a piece of its lip off with the double shotgun, blue blood spurting out of the wound.

    TAGGART
Die, you fat tubs of lard!

The first Cacodemon dies and its body falls toward him. Taggart turns and dives off the wall, grabbing a handful of razor wire at the last possible second. The Cacodemon’s body lands and rolls off the wall and falls to the earth below. Arlene reaches down a hand and grabs Taggart by the wrists, pulling him up.

Tij and the last of Gallatin's men, GRAYSON, batter the second beast with gunfire. More can be seen converging on the horizon.

    TAGGART
    We gotta go!

He and Arlene start sprinting. They leap to the roof of the warehouse.

    GALLATIN
I've got this bitch - get going!

Yoshida, Tij and Grayson take off. Gallatin wrenches loose a length of razor wire and hurls it at the Cacodemon. The creature swallows it hungrily. He turns to run - the snarling ball of evil hurtles after him.

Suddenly, like a dog on a leash, it's jerked back by the razor wire - except the wire saws through its cheek and the back of its head, slicing the Cacodemon in half.

Gallatin jumps and falls into Tij's arms.

    GALLATIN
    Let go of me.

Arlene pries open a ventilation duct as Gallatin quickly gets to his feet and steps away from Tij.

    ARLENE
    Hurry! This way!

    INT. IO COMPLEX - WAREHOUSE

They slide out of the duct and land on a stack of crates, piled nearly to the ceiling. The entire warehouse is like this, one big labyrinth of boxes. It’s also pitch black, as the lights are off and the switch for them is located at the actual entrance to the building.

    ARLENE
There's a door on the west side that’ll take us straight into the
    crater.

Taggart looks down and sees an Imp walking through the shadows below.

    TAGGART
    They're in here too.

    GALLATIN
    How many?

Holding out a palm, Yoshida peers into the labyrinth with his third eye.

    YOSHIDA
    Too many.

Arlene detaches a flashlight from her armor.

    ARLENE
    (sarcastic) Great.

    GRAYSON
    Well, we can't stop now.

INT. IO COMPLEX - WAREHOUSE LABYRINTH

They lower themselves into a canyon of crates with that single light to guide them. While Arlene tries to figure out where exactly they are, the others watch the darkness anxiously.

    TAGGART
    Yoshida?

    YOSHIDA
They're closing in. They know we’re here.

    ARLENE
    This way.

They start forward, but something scrapes along the floor behind them. They whip around, but the light reveals nothing. Taggart narrows his eyes and glances up to discover that an Imp is crawling down the crates towards them. It shrieks at him.

Tij splatters its face with a double-barreled shotgun blast. From behind them, Grayson suddenly screams. They all turn and Grayson staggers towards them, blood pouring from his arm. Something moves in the darkness behind him and Arlene shines the light up, revealing a horde of Pinky Demons.

The Pinky Demons in the lead makes a leap forward and snaps at Grayson’s legs, sending him to the floor. As he falls, he accidentally lets loose some gunfire, shooting Gallatin in the shoulder.

Gallatin screams and the Pinky Demon begins tearing into Grayson’s body. Taggart opens fire, slamming the Demon with bullets. It screams and starts to move towards him, but two shots from Tij’s double shotgun is enough to finish it off. Yoshida aims his pistol at Arlene.

    ARLENE
Private, what the fuck are you...

    YOSHIDA
    (cutting her off) Move please.

She barely steps out of the line of fire when Yoshida drops a Pinky Demon that was sneaking up from behind, with four quick shots. As Taggart and Tij fire at the next Pinky Demon, another one rushes around it and slams it’s head into Taggart, knocking him back off his feet. It jumps and ands on him, bringing its fangs down into his thigh. Tij continues firing at the other Pinky Demon, slowly backing up as it advances.

    TAGGART
    Chew on this, Pinky!

He raises the chaingun so it’s right up against the skin of the demon and fills it with lead. Yoshida steps over him and continues picking off demons. Arlene leans down to help Taggart to his feet, but another Pinky Demon jumps her from behind, knocking her to the floor. Her flashlight flies from her grasp and the mechanical back legs of another Pinky Demon accidentally steps on the flashlight, crushing it.

Gallatin raises his sniper rifle with his bad arm and fires. The pain causes him to be off his mark and the bullet just misses the advancing Pinky Demon. Tij finishes hers off and turns, firing at the other one from behind. It whips its head around, growling at her. Gallatin uses that instant to properly aim and fire a succession of direct-hit sniper shots, which kills the Pinky.

Taggart sits up and fires at the Pink Demon attacking Arlene, until his gun runs on empty. Yoshida then takes over and between the two attacks, the Pinky Demon explodes in a grisly display of gore, showering most of it on Arlene who was trapped under it.

    YOSHIDA
That's all of 'em for now.

    TAGGART
    Not bad there, Private.

    GALLATIN
    Hey…

The shot that he fired earlier that went wild went right through a box that Gallatin is now looking into. He uses his good arm to open the crate and pull out a pair of goggles and slips them on.

    GALLATIN
    Amplification goggles.

    TAGGART
    Hook me up.

Gallatin takes out a second pair and hands them to Taggart.

TAGGART'S POV: The room becomes brightly-detailed, not in green night-vision but realistic light, as if the lights in the room had been turned on. Taggart sees Gallatin’s wound.

    TAGGART
    How's that shoulder, Sarge?

    GALLATIN
    I'll live.

He kneels over what’s left of Grayson’s body and shuts his eyes.

    GALLATIN
    Go with God, son.

INT. IO COMPLEX - WAREHOUSE - WEST WALL

They've reached the end of the labyrinth and Arlene opens a set of elevator doors.

    ARLENE
From here we go across the crater to Nukage Processing.

    INT. IO COMPLEX - ELEVATOR

Elevator music plays through the speakers as the five Marines wait out the descent.

EXT. IO COMPLEX - CRATER - WALKWAY - DAY

The elevator opens onto a catwalk which hugs the crater wall; beyond rumbles a huge greenish-yellow waterfall; more accurately, a sludgefall. Gallatin seizes the railing and gags at the smell.

    GALLATIN
    How're we gonna breathe?

    TAGGART
Suck it up. I used to wade through this shit every day.

The walkway stretches around the Falls and out of view. They start their journey across the walkway.

    TIJ
    Is there something down there?

She points to the green pool at the bottom of the crater. It looks like some kind of fat creatures are sloshing through it, but due to the distances down, it is hard to pick out. Gallatin pulls on his goggles.

GALLATIN'S POV: The goggles zoom in on the image of several bloated, greasy Mancubus’. They look up and open their toothless mouths in a serious of deafening roars.

    GALLATIN
Whatever they are, they see us.

Tiny fireballs become much, much larger as they hurtle up toward the walkway at high speed.

    TAGGART
    Back!

They slam their backs up against the wall as the entire walkway shakes from the impacts. Fire licks through the cracks at their feet.

    TAGGART
    Move it or lose it!

The walkway continues to take fire as the group breaks into a run. A shriek from behind causes them to stop and turn around just in time to see a Revenant stepping off the elevator.

    GALLATIN
    Holy shit.

He drops to one knee and aims the rifle. Taggart grabs the scruff of his collar and drags him off as they return to running.

    GALLATIN
    What the hell, Corporal?!

The Revenant crouches and fires two heat-seeking missiles at them. Gallatin turns his head at the noise.

    GALLATIN
    Oh.

The missiles follow the crater's curve as they zero in on the Marines. Taggart stops on the spot, the others following suit.

    TAGGART
    Wait...wait...NOW!

They throw themselves to the catwalk, and the missiles slam into the rock wall. Gravel showers over them. More fireballs pound the underside of the walkway as Taggart reloads his chaingun. He returns to his feet and begins blasting away at the Revenant.

    GALLATIN
Oh, he gets to shoot it.

    ARLENE
    Get a move on, Gallatin!

Arlene, Gallatin, and Tij start running again. Despite being sprayed with flecks of stone and spent bullets, the Revenant refuses to slow down in its pursuit. It fires two more missiles as it rushes towards Taggart. The missiles are caught in mid-flight by chaingun fire and detonate over the sludgefalls.

    TAGGART
    Let’s rock and roll, motherfucker.

He turns the chaingun down and fires on the walkway itself, snapping it in two. The Revenant's half begins peeling away from the crater wall as Taggart has severed all of the supports with his fire.

    TAGGART
Didn’t see that coming, did ya? Ha Ha ha!

The Revenant roars and primes its launchers as it’s dumped into the Falls. The pool below is lit up by fire as the misfired rockets go off, taking out the Mancubi.

Still shouting laughing insanely, Taggart fires down into the crater. Arlene runs back for him and grabs him, but takes him by surprise and he nearly backhands her.

    ARLENE
    Flynn!

    TAGGART
    I...

    ARLENE
(cutting him off) Conserve your ammo?

    TAGGART
    Right.

The two turn and run to catch up to the others.
