Hammond's Dream Ch.4

“Yes Mr. Philips,” Dr. Derrick Carter answered Scott Philips on the phone. “I’m doing fine. I got your message about Oracou, is it the goats again?”
“No,” Philips answered. “This time it was one of the guides. He was taking a couple of tourists on a hike through the western area of Ismolaya near the village. A storm forced them to camp out over night near the mountains edge. Overnight, apparently, he disappeared.”
“And the guide?” Carter asked.
“No, it doesn’t seem like he made it. At least it’s not likely.”
“Does the couple know what happened?” Carter asked anxiously.
“No, they have no idea. It doesn’t seem like they want to know either. They’re leaving back to Seattle tomorrow morning.”
“That’s good.” Carter said. He didn’t want this to become a problem, there was a brief pause.
“So, did you get the information we need?” Philips said.
“Yah, most of it,” Carter said. “We should be leaving the second week of August. As long as you have those papers by July we should be fine.”
“And what about predators?” Philips interrupted.
“Most of the carnivores are located in the interior of the island with the exception of the compsognathus, and a few carnivores that may hunt at the cave entrance on the river delta. That’s south of where we’re going to set up camp.”
“And, what’s a compsognathus?”
“Small carnivore, about two feet long, one foot high, slender necks, basic therapod build. Don’t worry abut them, they shouldn’t be a problem”.
Philips thought for a second, “what about those caves, why would there be carnivores there?”
“Well the caves run from the river on the east side of the island through the cliff walls and out to sea. And the river attracts animals, it’s used as a water source, and carnivores hunt where animals gather unprotected,” Carter continued. “We will observe no farther than a one hundred fifty yards radius from the beach camp.”
“What about safety equipment, and who else is going?”
“Besides us, I’m going to get my assistant Clay James, and what about Tim Murphy, he’s a paleontologist who was actually at Jurassic Park when the accident happened, did you talk to Williams about him?”
“Yah, I heard about him years back when he was released from Costa Rica with his sister.” Philips said. “By the way, there’s also Karl Mason, he’s going to be our pilot. He’s a trained professional, and going as one of the precautions. You know, in case we need immediate departure from the island, he can fly us back to the mainland.”
“Well, as long as he knows what he’s getting in too,“ Carter said.
Philips took a moment to look a round. “Don’t worry, this guy is good.”
Mason, trained for combat piloting was Philips first choice. They were old college buddies, and Philips trusted his loyalty.
“So who else do you have?” Philips said.
“Williams has been trying to get another paleontologist, Amanda Harper. She’s been busy working in Africa on a new dig near Cairo. Williams is going to have to use his funding power there as well as with Murphy.”
“And the safety equipment,” Philips cut off, “what about weapons.”
“Yes we’re bringing two handguns and four lindstradt air rifles.”
“Should that be enough?” Philips asked.
“It should be, we don’t plan on being very interactive with the animals you know. Remember ,these are just precautions, and this is going to be a short trip, we’re not going to excavate, just investigate,” Carter said with a firm tone. “You know I’m risking everything for this, if the government finds out about what were doing on the island or that were going anywhere near it-”
“Like I told you, no one is going to know,” Philips said. “We’ll be in and out in a few days at most. It won’t be to hard to get Tim, at least I don’t think it would be, he’s young and naive, he doesn’t even know we’re going without permits.”
“If you say so.” Carter shot back. “Well, I’ll speak to you again when I find out more about Tim and Amanda.”
“With that Philips hung up the phone and walked out of the airport towards the parking garage.
