The novel is pretty tightly written, so there are a lot of seemingly inconsequential details and characters early on (such as Johann, the inn-keeper's daughter, Antoinette, and George Featherly) that end up becoming suddenly important at the end. Not a scene or character is wasted. So my problem is in cutting that down. My hope is that I can keep it in, keep it at a reasonable length, and then go back and cut down on some of the early dialogue. In my experience it's easier to cut things out of a story than to put them in.
That said, your comments are valuable, as when I'm editing they'll highlight a section to be cut down.

I'm enjoying the story, thus far. But, it has not totally grabbed me, yet. I mean, the characters are enjoyable, and while the story is different from what is normally posted here, it just seems to have some poor pacing, and moves along slowly. It's still early on, however. So, I'm still looking forward to reading more.

The first major action sequence will be about another twenty pages on, and the heaviest action doesn't come until the final half hour. I hope it will be worth the wait!

A much needed break from the usual drivel we get here.
The character development was especially good, and is working slowly towards something im sure will be spectacular. Though i'm still waiting for the swashbuckler you said this would be ;).
It reminds me of the man in the iron mask, because i believe Rudolph to look like the king.
Johaan acted like Rudolph was someone he knew.
Very nice.
