The reason I feel JP3 is better is cuz it does what it sets out to do. Deliver a fun adrenaline rush of an action movie with understandable characters, and a couple of good twists in the little plot it needed. PotA on the other hand, tried to be some revolution epic like Gladiator, Braveheart, or the 13th Warrior. (That 13th warrior reference was a joke, heh heh). The dialogue coulda been better, as well as the human characters. Still, U all can expect a sequel in 2003. That's Hollywood. Ya know what? I wonder if the PotA DVD will have the fabled 4 alternate endings?

BTW, JP Buff: Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Oh Mother of God! *vomits like a nobody's business*

Well, look at the bright side all. We're still $55,250,000 ahead of PotA. Plus, from all the bad reviews I've been hearing, PotA's Box Office should sink faster than an Onix on a steel raft.

"Get your paws off of me, you damned dirty humans!"

As I understand it, this is a line from the movie. Barf.

I also understand that Charlton Heston's ape character says something similar to his final line from the original, modified to fit the context. Double-barf.

Now, I've already said that I don't really care about this JP3 vs. PotA stuff. What I want to know from the people who've seen PotA is this: are those lines actually in the movie, and do they actually work in context or do they come off as unbearably lame?

Although I liked both films, neither of them have any staying power whatsoever. JP3 ate up the competition it's first week at the box office, but then it dropped 56% the next weekend. POTA will do the same. Both films will have made a lot of money by the end of the year, but neither will be the biggest grossing film of the year. That honor will go to either Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.

Okay, maybe not that bad. But, come on. You're talking to the guy that saw the original JP 24 times in the theater, who does paleo, loves dinosaurs, and is a huge movie buff. While POTA was not the best film of the summer (my vote is to Shrek on that one), it was by far a better made film. Cinematography, plot, graphics. The acting (especially for the apes) sucked, but hey, JP3 was no Oscar winner in that catagory either. Don't say that POTA sucks until you see it, otherwise, keep your mouth closed.
    Peace,

jpreal, how much money a film makes does not decide whether it's a good film or not. Memento and Moulin Rouge were the best films I've seen this year and their gross won't come anywhere near JP3 or POTA. I happened to like JP3 a great deal as well, but I went and saw it tons of times in the first week, just like everyone else. That's simply the kind of film that it is. Everyone MUST SEE it the first few days of its release and naturally that attitude dies down the second week. The problem with these films is that they make HUGE their first weekend, and they cannot possibly come even close to reproducing those numbers in the second, especially when yet another big film is released.

I don’t think Planet of the Apes or Jurassic Park 3 has staying power. Jurassic park 3 already fell 56% this weekend, and Planet of the Apes will do the same next weekend. One reason being that they are not very good films. Planet of The Apes will with out a doubt surpass Jurassic Park 3, but it will not be the top film of the summer.

You see, you can watch Jurassic Park 3 as many times as you like, but remember that no one else is doing the same. Let’s just be happy that it did the money it did to justify an another.

    here's my take:
POTA will have less staying power. it grabbed Burton's fans and scifi fans but the movie is not good and much less shocking and intriguing than the original. yet, there's an entire generation of kids who have not seen the originals and who are fascinated by a primates world.
However, JP III might start to disappoint too because it's no rated R! if it had been Rated and really gorry and frightening, without humour ( ok, one joke allowed ), given the huge fan base of JP who are now 17+, I pretty much imagine it would have done better or hold better over this weekend. it's still a PG13 movie.... sigh. I hope JPIV will be a R movie ( which still allows PG13 kids to go with parents)

Honestly, what's with this thing? Tracking JP3's gross makes sense, because we want to judge the probability of another sequel (read: very good), but why do any of us care about PotA?

Maybe PotA is good, maybe not. I'm not going to see it, either way. Not because it's "competing" with JP3 (whatever), but because my dad, the biggest PotA fan I know, said it was rather on the suckage side. That's all *I* need to hear about it.

Amazing? that's $22.5 million was made in three days. while Jurassic Park 3 opening day was $19 million. That's decent but not really good. As for the Lost World, Regarless of the Holiday weekend, it still drop less than Jurassic Park 3. Meaning, that it's more well liked than Jurassic Park 3. If it was as bad as some of you like to make it, it would not have made the money it did.

I liked Jurassic Park 3, but in my opinion, it not as good as the first two.

The gross of the movie has already proven that.
