Neill's first break in acting was in "Omen 3". Neill wasn't so keen with the idea, but a friend insisted -- he even paid for his plane ticket! (From: SeanArcher)

The use of CG should only be a part of a movie if has an animitronic double. Movies tend to fail because they focus way to much on special effects to begin with but in the industry as it is the best movies that use special effects also use animitronic doubles. My whole point being that you can usually spot a fake computer generated dinosaur etc. Realism is needed.

I would bet that if you compared the cost to build one of Stan's animatronics matched up against how much screen time those animatronics actually have, versus CGI and how much screentime *they* have, animatronics is about even in the price area.

I'd argue that CG is so good now, even close up scenes could be done convincingly.

With JP3, it honestly felt like Stan Winston was working on the project just so they could say "Stan Winston is working on the project" and go around to ET letting Julie Moran control the raptor..

    Dan,

CG is expenisve and animatronics add something to the film. It adds realism and not that computer-aided feeling to the film.

I liked the raptors in this installment annd their animatronics. The acting is incredibly better when there is something to work with.

That shot in the Spino mouth, I thought that was animatronic.

So, the animatronic Spino mouth looked fake, well so did the closeup of it grabbing that first actor in his mouth. That was CGI and it looked crap. So before people start going on a "100% CGI" crusade, remember CGI closeups tend not to look as realistic as the animatronic closeups.

Yeah, the Spino mouth made it look totally fake, remind some of Baby in baby, Secret Of The Lost Legend. Way to stiff.
And you do't need to see what there's to ahve great eye contact. The old 60's show, Land Of The Giants had some of the ebst FX around, and only once could you tell it was fake, when a Giant held Little Person, and they were talkign to each other. otherwise, they did a terrific job, and that sued split screen. CGI should make this a breeze. But animatronics work best for detsruction of objects with people in them, when shot from behind or the side, ala T-rex Explorer attack.

Black and white cookie? Like in Seinfeld? Lets not forget, the black and white cookie made Jerry hurl.

Its simple...their needs to be a balance between these two elements.

All Animatronics would be bad and all CG would be bad...its the whole black and white cookie thing...

The animatronics are the best part! How else could look like they are looking straight at the dino? You can kinda tell if they are computerized when the people don't look right at them. But I agree that at some parts you deffinitaly need the computer ones!

hmm this definitely is something to think about, but watch your original JP DVD once again and watch the sick trike scene, without knowing jack about animatronics and CG that scene looked incredibly real, the engineers and artists made that thing a REAL dinosaur, but, i agree that the fast scenes, or pretty much when a dinosaur needs to really move, then it should be CG, but that scene in jp, if it was cg, woulda been crap

Well, like Sam Neill says, reacting to something that isn't there has become part of an actors *job*. If they can't do it right, a) get different actors, or b) get a skilled director who can help the actors. The "we need something physical so we can act better" excuse is pretty lame.

nah, animatronics are here to stay. Its way harder for the human actors to interact with cgi than animatronics. I personally think they help alot in realism.

I thought the T-Rex eye in JP3 looked sooo fake. They could have done a whole lot better on it. So did the Spino mouth, when it roared at the people in the plane. It never completely closed!

I agree Dan. The animatronics looked bad in the previous films and keep getting worse.

Hmm, Stan, why don't you just say it? "If we do it all CG, I'll be out of a job."

Personally, I still strongly hold the opinion that animatronics are on the way out. JP4 should be 100% CGI.
