It is a pure hard fact, whatever Lucas says, that celluloid is better. Digital film has roughly 80% the resolution and lower color depth than celluloid film; it suffers from the unique problem of artifacting. Film looks visibly better, and will for some time (particularly with the development of new 48fps film projection, which is 400% better quality than standard film and fourteen times cheaper for movie theatres to install).

Sorry to disappoint, but the 'digital revolution' in film is all hype.

A digital theater is only good if the film being shown was shot digitally. (Star Wars Episode II for example)

Go to Starwars.com and download the second Episode II making of video. Lucas himself defends the new, all digital cameras being used for Episode II. The quality, he says, is in fact better than traditional film besides all the benefits as far as price and time go.

Dan, have you been invited to the premiere yet? I mean, Universal owes you a lot for contributing to the marketing of this film. I'm sure it will make a few extra million, if not more, thanks to this site.

I saw a screening of ANTZ in DPL...and the traditionnal version did actually look better and more natural! Digital theatre will only be worth considering when there are universal specifications and formats, technical development, MONEY (how can movie theatres afford this new system for every single screening room?), when people know how to use them. Until then even George Lucas can't change 100 years of moviemaking with one "film"...

Not at all. I'd rather see a traditionally-projected movie in a theatre with a good digital sound system any day. Hell, we without the digital cinemas are better off.

Actually, Glen, people prefer 'celluloid' films precisely because of picture quality. For all of you guys who are excited about this: don't be. 'Digital' can be hyped because 'digital' is a stimulating buzz-word; with the introduction of THX standard and DVD video and CD audio, the word 'digital' has become synonomous with the word 'better' in the vernacular. I'm here to tell you it's not.

Digital 'film' runs, now, at only about 80% the picture quality of regular film. Audio quality is precisely the same (most theatres already have digital sound). I am one hundred percent sure about this: I am, after all, a film student. Digital is hyped not because it is better, but because it is cheaper for studios. Digital film means much more expensive projectors for theatre owners, and lower picture quality for theatregoers (there is significant doubt that digital picture quality will ever equal standard film). The advantage is for the studios, because they don't have to buy film and pay for processing, and they can see shots without waiting for rushes, and they can edit sooner, more simply, and more cheaply.

If you want to see thre film at its best, go to a standard-projection theatre with digital sound. If you want JP4 to look as good as the first three, boycott digital theatres. This is a trend in moviemaking that bothers me (even though it will make my thesis film considerably cheaper and easier to edit).

    "the Cinemark Legacy in Dallas"

This is my theatre!! How awesome! They have DLP (Digital Light Production) in the theatre, where they've shown "Dinosaur," "Toy Story 2," and digital movies like that.

This is so awesome! "The Legacy" is where I always go to see movies at. As a matter of fact, I was actually planning on going to see "A.I." there with my friends tomorrow! Is this great news or what!?!?

    Awesome!! :-) :-) :-)
