The rex IS jurassic park. The rex is needed, sure ther may be bigger and nastier dinos, but in the JP series it's the rex's that are the real stars. I would have trouble adjusting to any other large predator, even the carnataur in dinosaur seemed to pale against the rex.

A sapien could easily kill a rex: sapiens have weapons. Not that I see a real need for that; I can't imagine a rex trying very hard to eat a sapien. A couple hundred pounds of wet meat means nothing to a seven tonne animal--even if it were an ectotherm, which I doubt.
About replacing the rex, I wouldn't mind seeing the Carnotaurus sastrei in a film [I haven't seen Disney's little joke yet; I'm kinda predisposed against it] as a chamaeleon. Although something like an Allosaurus fragilis or a Spinosaurus aegypticus [and good luck finding any sort of spinosaur DNA] might be interesting.
I dunno. There are about fifteen hundred known species of deinosaurs right now; the rex was hardly the most impressive of them. It's the most publically-known, I suppose, which is why Chrchton used it. But there are easily a hundred more interesting carnosaurs to play with. Assuming that the audience aren't shorted out by the switch.
--Gremlin

I think if the T-rex is not going to have a big part in the film then shouldn't they change the cover with the t-rex on it.

I think it is really upsetting to hear this news. I think the T-Rex's were fantastic and even the JP logo is of a T-Rex. I don't think the T-Rex will go without a fight.

Yep. Spielberg loves the T-Rex, and if he has much influence on the JP3 story, it'll at least have a cameo. I think the filmmakers do realize they are under pressure to give us a new dino-villain this time. The first one it was the Rex, the Raptors, and the Dilophosaur, but JP2 only had the Compys to add. I would love to see a herd of Spitters in there somewhere, this time fully grown (I think they're at least twice as big as the one in JP). Make the main carnivore camoflauged but not the Carnotosaur, people will remember them from Dinosaur and think Johnston is copying when in fact Dinosaur probably copied Crichton (they weren't camoflauged in Dinosaur but the chances that Disney would pick those in particular, and the fact they died out long before the Cretaceous even ended- sounds desperate to me).

It won't be Giganotosaurus. For all practical purposes it's identical to T-rex That's like having the human cast be clones of the other two movies charatcers. T-rex will probabl have a cameo.

Gigantosaurus was a plant eater. You are thinking about Giganotosaurus.

I do think Spielberg sees the dinos as the main characters, but I don't think there will be a big dino fight (unless it's like the one at the end of the original Jurassic Park). And who knows, maybe the dino to take the place of the T-Rex would be a Gigantosaur or maybe something in that area (since it is a bigger carnivore than T-Rex and maybe even more aggresive). It would be a new challenge and a nice change from all the dinosaurs we're used to seeing.

Honestly I think Spielberg sees the dinos as the characters. That's why you had Raptors and T-Rexes and Parasaurs and Trikes in JP2, but not Sam Neill and Laura Dern. I'm sure T-Rex will be in this one, in what capacity I don't know, but it's a good bet that Johnston and Spielberg mutually feel that it isn't JP without having Rexes in there somewhere. I also doubt now that the Carnotosaurs are in JP3 because Dinosaur had to put them in as their main villain (maybe they got it from Crichton's book in '95). Also this reports seems fairly vague and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Goody. No more T-rex constantly attacking people, even with a good reason. I doubt they'd kill em off, seing as how bunch of humans can't kill a T-rex. Mybe a big dino fight?
