Yeah, Dan, you had a right to be concerned due to the parade of writers attacking the script -- 'fixes' usually do more to break a movie than fix it . . . But I was playing for once the optimist, a role I didn't play with Lost World, if only because Bill Macy is in this. He's seriously one of my favorite actors, and one I respect (in a way I don't respect, say, Robin Williams -- a comic genius who has done some <i>baaaaaad</i> movies). But, as I've said, I'm worried now.

As to earlier comments to the tune of 'Spielberg wouldn't let it go awry' -- oh, yes, he would. He had little or nothing to do with this movie -- and he can't just 'quit', as has been suggested, for a lot of reasons -- not the least of which the fact that Universal would sue his ass for violation of contract. The fact of the matter is, an executive producer is <i>not</i> an important job, creatively at least. It is an executive position (hence the title), often given to the financier of the film, or the studio executive gearing it. (Michael DeLuca, New Line's former exec, as executive producer on Lord of the Rings, for example.) Now, that's not to say they have <i>no</i> creative control -- ideally they shouldn't, but often meddling execs take it upon themselves to 'fix' a story.

Spielberg's different, of course. He is technically an executive -- at Dreamworks, of course, and at Amblin -- but he also often exudes control (to varying degrees) from that position. The Goonies he barely touched, Casper he guided to some degree, Gremlins was his idea, and he practically directed Poltergeist. And it seemed, with his early involvement, he probably would have taken the same route here. But he didn't.

He did give his baby away, as has been stated here elsewhere. A smart move. Why? I'll give you three reasons: 1) His committment to Dreamworks. It's his own bloody studio. He vowed that TLW would be his last non-DreamWorks pic, logically, and it was. Yet Universal, equally logically, wouldn't give him the lucrative title 'JP'. 2) TLW, a commercial success, was a critical failure. Spielberg hasn't had many of those. And he didn't want to return. He never did a sequel to 1941! or to Hook, after all. 3) He was offered Stanley Kubrick's A. f*ckin' I. Who in their right mind would pass up that opportunity? So he pulled a Jurassic Park, only in reverse: he trusted the movie to Joe Johnston for production while Spielberg focused on another project, and now returns to oversee post-production, as he had (presumably) overseen pre-production. Only to find his baby looking much different than it had when he left it. Ouch.

Finally, to whoever said, 'Well, Tea Leoni said he thought it was cool. . .' Come on. Do you think that she's going to say, at a media event for the movie, 'Actually, he was quite angry. He thought it was abysmally bad.'

Let's throw out recent cast and crew statements, please. They're going to tote the company line until this thing has its run, you bet your ass.

IT WILL BE GOOD IN THE SENSE THAT THERE WILL BE DINOSAURS, TEETH,BLOOD,DEATH,AND A TROPICAL ISLAND. OK? OK.

So what if the script was hacked up! I kinda like collages. . . phew. Don't worry be happy. Speilberg is an overrated putz, worship Chrichton instead.

even if this is true, which it probably isnt, if speilberg isnt happy, then this is some cause for concern.

This could be true. Nobody seems happy with the way thigns are going. And yes, Speilberg praise dit before. But guess what? Things happened. Thigns changed. Time wnet on. now Spielberg cna ahte it. And maybe Johnston is doing a spectacular job, for the crap they've made. This film was poor sicne the plot. The documentary diea would ahev made more sense. Why set up a aprasailing shop for the islands? Makes betetr sense to use a helicopter. OK, might scare the dinos, but long rnage cameras are good. it'd make betetr sens eto sue cable cards, notjust limit your viewing to a tether. JP/// might do well, if people like the SFX enough to avoid a simplistic plot. But changed dinos, new dino baddy, and too much action will probably ruin it.

Spielberg has no right to complain (if this story is in fact true, which I don't think it is). He could have helmed the ship for this sucka, but he didn't. And he could have been a little more involved, but he chose not to do so. Maybe he should have never handed his baby off.

And also, to the person that said Macy has been quiet: He was on Dennis Miller last Friday, and he did sound positive when talking about JP3 (but I did get a slight "company line" feel to what he said).

Don't worry people JP3 will be fine. Why? because there will be dinosaurs in it. Did anyone here actually think there would be a good script or story or acting? The only way this movie would disappoint me is if it had no dinosaurs in it. if it was called JP3: THE CUSTODY BATTLE OF TIM AND LEX, then i'd be worried. The only possible way i could hate the movie is, not the directing, plot, or writing being bad, but if the kid in it is really annoying. Sadly i believe this may be true.
Anakin ruined Phantom Menace, not Jar Jar. This kid has the power to ruin this movie aswell. The last thing i want to see is a spunky mop topped tike going "WOOOOOAAAAH, COOOOOOL, DINOSAURS!".
Speilberg and Macy may hate the movie but they arent a dinosaur loving dork like i am. Being a film major JP has always been my hidden guilty pleasure, and it will continue to be so.

At 1:05:17 AM on 2/1/2001, Embryo said:
If Spielberg hates it so much don't you think he would quit working on the project. Executive Producer is a cosiderably important role in a film (in this case there are two producers though, so.....) but he was on the news last night because he was knighted and they had a small tidbit interview with him about JP3. He said "it's exciting, and the new Director is doing a SPECTACULAR job!"

So, I would've updated on this sooner, but the report was on the midnight news and I had school today so I couldn't say until now, which is when I got on the internet and found out about this BS now. This is false. He got the info from Bob with the skeleton, or he was lying.

Hey Rexoraptor the last time that I checked the faggot who messed up the plot for TLW was Spielberg. If I remember correctly the ending was to be on the village in the island instead of (the f*ck*d up) San Diego crap.

Oh come on, i seriously doubt Spielberg is upset, this is just plain fake news, and TLW didn't suck Ovi, it was just that they screwed up the plot a little cause of that faggot Koep, and yes, i bet it was Universal that told Macy to shut the f*** up.

I think I gotta go with Dan on this one. This is pretty scary, and it IS possible. Bill Macy has not said anything else because Universal must've shut him up, not because he's changed his mind. And Sam Neill is unusually tight-lipped about the film... and remember when Téa Leoni said that if the movie failed it wasn't her fault? You guess. The thing I can't explain myself is WHY. I mean, what the hell went wrong ??? I was watching The Rocketeer last night, and I thought it was so cool, especially that shot where the plane flies through the explosion. I mean, what happened ?? Not even the writers of Election could pull this off nicely at least ??? God. You see my point... why this happened ??? WHY ???? One thing's for sure... it'll be better than TLW for many. It just can't be any worse. Not that TLW's bad, but you get my point...

As for the validity of this, who knows.. I don't know, I'm just posting what people send me. It does fit what we've been hearing for awhile.. problems on the set, multiple writers coming in to "fix" the script, Macy's comments awhile back, etc. Obviosuly we have a reoccuring theme here, people.

Personally, I've been "worried" ever since I saw name after name of writers parading through the production.

I'm not certain as to whether this is true or not, but it does add to my anxiety about this film. Back in July, when I heard that they had hired William H. Macy -- and with him the writers of Election -- I thought things were shaping up quite nicely. This movie could be better than Lost World. But reports of troubles, along with Macy's criticisms, have me worried. Macy's criticism in particular -- these comments were later contradicted by his praise of the movie; I assure you that this is not illustrative of a change of heart, but merely indicates the studio found out what he was saying about the movie and yanked the choker on his leash. I'm absoultely certain that Universal was enraged by what he was saying, and probably reacted poorly -- stars of major summer vehicles bad-mouthing the pic is enough to give any studio executive an anyrism. And now, after all of this, Spielberg returns from production after months of work on AI to see where his little idea has been taken. We know that his idea has been warped beyond recognition by daily rewriting -- speaking as a writer and (future) director, I can understand his incredulous rage. I can't vouch for the story's truth -- but I can say it sadly oesn't surpirse me.

Yes, Bill Macy, one of the finest actors in Hollywood today, is in the film. Then again, Pete Postlethwaite was in Lost World, as well as Julianne Moore and Vince Vaughan and Richard Schiff and Jeff Goldblum -- all great actors. Hell, LW arguably had a better cast than JP3 (despite its deplorable lack of Sam Neill), and we all know it had a better director. The writing department is where things went wrong -- and from all accounts, that's where this moive falters as well.

I now officially declare 'I'm worried.'

    -Host

[BTW, Dan, it's 'hearsay', not 'heresy'. Unless you're planning on burning the informant at the stake for religious crimes. And, yes, we all worship JP3, but don't you think that's a bit of an over-reatcion?]

Yeah i know it does sound like it's not true, but i know it is. I am the person who talked to the woman at the store, and at first i didn't believe it. I'm still kinda skeptical, but it's what i heard. The pics I saw were of the producer with the raptor (he was hugging it) and he was standing by the skeleton, which was hanging from a tree in a yellow harness. Anyway, the thing about Spielberg was true, as far as I know (from what i heard) so don't call me stupid or anything like that because it's just what I heard, alright?

No, shit Spielberg doesn't like JP! Just now you guys figured it out? Was I the only one that noticed how he tried to make sure that he wouldn't have to make a JP3 when JP2 came out? Even when the first JP was being filmed Spielberg did most scenes in ONE TAKE (he calls it more natural *cough.. bullshit! cough*). I used to admire Steven, but after JP3 I really don't like him.. but of course, I'll still go see JP3 in hopes that the franchise will be redeemed.

You have got, to be be kidding me. Anyone could come to that conclusion and just add a BS, Spielberg hates the film stuff.

The orange Raptors in TLW are male, the raptor in the Stan Winston interview is male. Stan repeatedly says "he" or "him". Both the male and the female raptors must have headcrests. We know this from the Sam Niell interview, she had nice hair.

The Skeleton thing has already been mentioned. One fact does not make this more believable.

And poor Spielberg must have lost marbles. Why would he want to DRASTICALLY reduce his take in the first doller gross. Talk about stupid. This guy is full of it.
