My name is Dan Suarez, and I’m here to talk to all of you about Chivalry.
The Question is, is Chivalry Dead?
The answer is no, it’s just shot and bleeding out slowly on the side of the road.
Remember that Mel Gibson movie from a few years ago called What Women Want? I know I don’t, but the title alone makes me laugh. How could they make a movie about a man knowing what women want when women don’t even know themselves?
I’m conflicted. On one hand, there is the way of chivalry. The other, equality. The problem is that all I keep hearing is women asking for both. Unfortunately, they are the exact opposite. Chivalry asks for special treatment, equality obviously does not.
Should women be treated specifically? If my answer were to be aligned with all my other views, it would be no. But what about manners? I find myself naturally inclined to give extra sensabilities to women. I might offer my coat to a lady who’s cold, but how would a man react to such an offer? Probably not too well. He might think I’m pitching for the catcher, if you know what I mean.
The modern interpretation of chivalry (which is actually a meshing of medievil ideals of chivalry and courtly love) deals with men’s ettiquette and politeness towards women. Part of the reason we’ve seen a decline in this behavior is because American socitey in general is moving away from the traditional/old-fashioned forms of ettiquette and politeness. Manners just aren’t held to be as important as they once were, and so less and less men are raised to treat women in a chivalrous way.
Chivalry is also caught up in sex and courtship. Another reason for the decline in modern chivalry is the “nice-guys-finish-last” mentality that I know a lot of men subscribe to. The common complaint of “why do the jerks get all the guys?” makes a lot of the nicer guys jaded towards what they know to be the correct way to treat ladies. To be blunt, if you ain’t getting laid or loved, what’s the point?
I hold the door for everyone. If my friend was cold, I’d give them my coat regardless of gender. But then again, they know me well enough(hopefully) to understand that I’m not making a pass at them. When I’m out to dinner with a girl, I’ll offer to pick up the check, but won’t be offended if she wanted to go Dutch, and I wouldn’t be dissapointed if she didn’t offer to pay. The politeness and courtship of chivalry don’t demean or belittle anyone, they formalize and enhance the way we interact.
So it comes down to a choice: chivalry vs. equality.
The first choice is a lot more romantic and adds some magic to life for those who embrace it. It also robs women of a little dignity, I think. It’s almost demeaning to think that women would need your damn coat, anyway.
The second view is a dull, but more realistic and fair. If I were historically a second class citizen (and I’m trying to avoid writing “If I were a woman...”), I would sure want to be seen on a level equal to those around me.
One thing’s for sure, having both chivalry and equality in play warps the social dynamic, and is no way to run a railroad. Getting off the fence and picking one way or the other is the only way to go.

No it won't. I doubt they will remake Jurassic Park, and if they do it'll be way down the road, no time soon. If we never see a JP4 in theaters though, this whole direct to DVD sequel thing is taking off pretty well, so perhaps we'll see a straight to DVD JP4. I'm not saying that would be good, but heck if the franchise follows the trend of going from bad to worse as it has with the other sequels then really the only thing a theatrical sequel would have over a direct to DVD one would be better special effects.

My situation is a little different though, since my family owns a small video store. Our store switched to DVD before I did personally, so I watched DVDs from there.
Even now, I don't buy very many DVDs. I just "borrow" them from the store. I mostly just buy Sam Neill related DVDs for myself.

For me it was when a film I wanted to see (evolution) was only released on DVD. Initially I had DVD in my PC before I ever had a player.
Now you can get a DVD player for less than the price of a new DVD.!
And don't forget, we will all be upgrading our pc's with HD and Blue Ray writers before the end of the decade!

Yes they may also have the ability to fit a bunch more special features on but they have yet to use that extra space...plus, DVDs already have that ability...it's called Disk Two (or three or four or whatever the case may be).
I mean I know it's a pain to get up and flip the disk or put in another disk, but it's not worth the extra money to get the new formats or their players...plus, most of America could use the extra excercise (myself included). And while the picture quality may be a bit better, it's not enough for the double dip.

If you have all the given requirements (HD tv with a good res, like 3000:1 [alot are something simple such as 800:1 which still works], a hd cable and the player (I like blu ray)) then you can def. see a difference in quality.
As for extras, I agree. Blu Ray has an outstanding amount of space for there to be an ASS load of bonus features, and they should use it.
So: I vote JP on blu-ray, that would be awesome.
Also, kudos to Jurassiraptor for being the only other one to notice the 25th anniversary thing right away :)

I can't say this for sure but I predict that DVD's will remain the most popular and the standard until a new and truly innovational format is invented. Until that time, the only Blu-Ray products that will be sell much will be Playstation 3 games, and the only HD-DVD products that will sell will be products that are only sold in that format and that are duel compatible with regular DVD players.

My TV is an HD ready 32" flatty so that should be ok for blueray or HDDVD whichever takes over.
I still think DVD is generally good enough.

I brought the videos, then the first Gen DVD's. I did not update any further, nor will I. OK, if they take a trade in and charge 5 bucks per next gen DVD fine. I'm still updating my VHS collection as well. I got 4 to go. Not including some classics like Abbot and Costello collections or Roy Rogers, that don't have a DVD counterpart. No way I'm giving up Who's On First. An I've never touched Rogers. Apart from a few minutes testing it out when I first got it. It's all but Mint. Dusty cover, but vvirtual Mint tape.

Hardly anyone will notice that marginal difference in the picture, a difference that definately is not worth another buy of the same movie or the extra money it would cost. Throw on a bunch of extras or something that aren't on the DVDs, and then I might reconsider. Regardless though, there's no way I am buying an HDDVD or Blu-ray player, so if they do slap on a ton of extra stuff then it better be dual compatible with regular DVD players.

One last time my ass. Every time a new format comes out movies will be re-released. Personally I'm not switching to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray because frankly, aside from picture quality (which, as long as it is good, I don't really care about it and the picture quality on the current JP DVDs is great, or at least good enough for me) doesn't really have much more to offer than a standard DVD.
I'm sticking with DVDs, at least until the new formats offer something more (which I don't think they will) and go down in price...I mean I haven't even finished replacing all my VHS's with DVDs yet.
