He's not a poor director, he just tends to overlook minor things every once in a while, however those things usually don't detract from enjoying the movie.
Also, timing can be an issue. They might have had to trim out parts that explain stuff like that so it wouldn't be too long.
Maybe we will get an extended edition on DVD (but I doubt it. We hoped for that on JP, TLW, and especially JP3 as well).

this asnwers to the mistakes of WOFTW script are just great.

but i still think even in a fiction movie we must have a little of reality and the boy arriving at the house earlier than his father and even survived showed that steven is still a poor director in certain ways!

true, but even if he did survive that, it's hard to believe he could have got back to his grandparent's apartment in Boston faster than his dad and sister

Who knows, it's one of those scenes where you have to think 'It's a movie, anything can happen', the only possibility if you just had to think is that maybe he ran sideway across the field or got behind the big tripod before the explosion occured so the explosion wouldn't reach him. No clue.

I agree with you. I mean, we are in the middle of a war (excuse me, an extermination) and then all the sudden the machines (and their drivers) are dying, and they never even really give a clear reason for why it is happening. Also...remember when they are in the basement of his ex-wife's house, and the plane goes down, and everything is destroyed? Somehow, their van survives though. Hmmmm....also, when everyone was fighting to get their van....I know that people needed cars, but I highly doubt they would have been to the point of tearing away glass with their bear hands and even killing other people just to get one, especially when the ferry station was so close. (and by the way, why did they get on a ferry when they saw the tripods right behind them? I mean, a ferry doesn't go that fast, let alone fast enough to get away from one of those.
Also, how the hell did Tom Cruise's (forgot the name of his character) survive? It looked like everything got destroyed.
One other thing they didn't explain....what exactly were those red plants the martians (or whatever they were) were growing and fertilizing with human blood?

Anywho, all griping aside, it was a pretty good movie, one of Spielberg's better movies. It just had a bunch of errors and, like you said, ended a little too abruptly.

    >>and all i can say is that i never saw a movie treat humans so bad...<<

Try watching Passion of the Christ, or Ben-Hur, or one of the Alien or Predator movies, or hell even the three Jurassic Park movies have humans getting owned. There are hundreds. But yes, it was pretty gruesome the way they held that one guy on the ground then stabbed the hose into him and sucked out his blood n' guts.

With Steven Speilberg and George Lucas (despite the Star Wars prequels not being to good) producing/directing/writing it, it should be pretty good.

Really sucked after the JP & TLW boxset was pretty cool (they were my first ever DVDs).

So I'm really pleased it's coming out...but it certialny isnt celebrating an anniversary.

Not even George Lucas would do that. He celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of A New Hope with Star Wars: Special Edition. The original trilogy DVD's came out on a wierd anniversary year (actually, I don't think it was even on an anniversary) but they weren't celebrating the anniversary anyway.
Anywho, I think we can rest assured more versions of the original trilogy and possibly even the prequel trilogy are on the way. We already know that they are all six coming out in 3D eventually.
