Before becoming a director, JP3 director Joe Johnston had a long career as art director on several films, including the Star Wars trilogy, where he helped give designs a 'worn-out look'.

Maybe he should turn JP into a series of books, like the many series star wars has evolved into. he could write shorter stories, but more books. just an idea...

Exactly -- Crichton at his best has always been able to to go into our culture's current fears/hopes/issues/stereotypes/etc, and build an entertaining adventure around that. That's why I think Timeline failed, in that I'm not sure I know too many people who are concerned with time travel and it's ramifications, since we still have no idea how to time travel. :) I think that's why his new book sounds interesting to me, as nanotechnology is on the horizon...

You touch on a good point. Literary merit (or lack thereof) aside, Airframe was . . . well, 'timely' isn't the word . . . maybe proto-timely. That might be one of the greatest qualities of Crichton's books: the aithor is able to recognize growing trends and can discern where they may be going; in hindsight he seems to have preternatural foresight. Evidence The Terminal Man and its treatment of computers, Jurassic Park's applications of DNA, and Congo's prediction of an information economy in the near future. Of course the stories themselves are usually fantasy -- there will probably never be walking dinosaurs and the Japanese didn't drive America out of business. But the technological currents running throughout to the future relatively rarely lead astray.

Airframe was so under-rated, I'd even say 'before it's time'... I mean, it was written *before* Flight 800, before AA 587, and (obviously) before 9/11. It was an important book that raised numerous issues about airlines before anyone really cared. I think it's probably Crichton's most important contribution to the liteary world.

If I HAD to rank, it'd probably go something like this:

1 Airframe
2 Jurassic Park
3 A Case of Need (another important story)
4 Rising Sun
5 Disclosure
6 Andromada Strain
7 Terminal Man
8 Eaters of the Dead
9 Congo
10 Lost World
11 Sphere (Never really a big Sphere fan, too SciFi for my liking)
12 Great Train Robbery
13 Travels (Crichton's crazy autobiography)
14 Five Patients (Crichton turned the "hand" case in this book into one of the first surgeries on the ER TV show)
15 Timeline (I didn't really feel like he was trying much with this one)
16 Electronic Life (Crichton programs in Apple BASIC.. a fun read, check your library)

Before I continue, let me say that I feel myself morally obligated to despise anybody here from Europe. Only because I'm a huge European history buff (indeed, at the moment an undergrad majoring in European history), but I've never been to the continent. My family isn't rich, and I'll be going to Yale Law School in another year, which is a tad pricey. . . Not that I'm bitter, but, well, actually, I *am* a bitter, twisted man. Damn you and your spectacular countryside and deep-rooted history!

Back to Crichton. . .

I admit that I was happily surprised by Timeline, if only because my expectations were low. Still, I say he hasn't written anything really great since JP. . .

Since we North Americans have a fetish for listing things, here goes:

CRICHTON'S WORKS OF FICTION, RANKED (all in my not-so-humble opinion):

12 Airframe
11 Eaters of the Dead
10 Disclosure
9 The Great Train Robbery
8 Rising Sun
7 The Terminal Man
6 The Lost World
5 Timeline
4 Congo
3 The Andromeda Strain

And . . . Tied for first place. . .

1 Jurassic Park
1 Sphere

Well I've read all of his books (yes, even Electronic Life and his Jasper Johns biography), and I found Timeline to be the most weak out of all of them. Then again, I loved Airframe, which a lot of people hated, so what do I know.
