JP is a sci-fi thriller which mainly focuses on carnivores and people evading them along with other stuff (that's a generalization of sorts but for all extensive purposes it fits). That's not to say I don't like it but that's not what Dinotopia is. It also isn't a documentary like WWD, it's never meant to be. Dinotopia is more of a fantastic tale of human/dino drama in a world where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures have survived on an island, developed culture, language and writing and have developed a close relationship with humans (which isn't as far-fetched as it seems -- see my post in the other Dinotopia update) It's not supposed to be an action-packed thrill ride. Read the books and you'll find out more of Dinotopia's society. You'll probably find out why there is so much importance on the Pteranodons(which is the reason I think they are a good choice for the final battle) and why there isn't an overwhelming importance on Tyrannosaurs, which is for the simple logical fact that they really didn't get along with the humans or the herbivorous dinos (as well as the Pteros, albeit it seems they were more estranged), and stayed more or less isolated from other contact. It seems that mostly the smaller, often regarded as more intelligent carnivorous dinosaurs have made a relationship with the humans.
Bottom line is, I think it is a faithful continuation of the original books (though there may have been some inaccuracies, like the sub, though it doesn't necessarily have to be the model in the second book) and a good story of the adventures of living in a place where dinosaurs and people go hand in hand.
