I have to agree with everyone, stop freaking out, and spend time with your friend!! I'm not saying its wrong for him to want JP3 badly, but until you get that, why don't you do other things he will miss? Like reading, maybe take him outside in a wheel chair, listen to music...don't just spend every second you could be spending with your friend, looking for the movie. When he goes, you won't have anything to look back on, when his final days where being spent, with you searching for a movie. I'am very very sorry for your friend, and you.

I am going to have to disagree with that slightly, DVD's were originally conceived as a higher-capacity medium for pc's, not movies, (in fact, DVD stands for Data Versatile Disc, not Digital Video Disc as some people would have you believe), however, with the huge size, one of the first apparent uses were movies,

If you scratch it bad enuf, ok, so let's compare this,

    DVD:
    Can be scratched,

    VHS:
Degrades every time you play it,

Simple age can break down a tape,

    Inferior picture quality,

    Inferior audio quality,

Tape can get caught in the VCD heads if the tape and/or VCR is dirty, and can snap/break,

gee, not hard to see that, lol,

"how come nobody noticed the flaws in VHS's until DVD's came out?"

Good Christ, of course they did! That's why they invented DVDs. It's this thing called technological progress: you invent somethihng that is by it's very nature flawed (*nothing*, I assure you, is perfect), and then you examine those flaws and research ways to counteract those flaws and then, years down the road, you invent something new and better to replace it. And then you look at the flaws in this new item, and work toward eventually creating something even better, and so on.

So, please, dispense with the idiotic questions. The fact remains that DVDs are unequivocally better than VHS tapes: they are of far higher quality picture and sound, they come with lots of extra features and goodies, and they're relatively inexpensive. (DVDs are priced about what videos were a decade ago; DVD players are cheapers than VCRs were a mere five years ago -- and there aren't many things in this world that *decline* in price as time wears on.) Beyond that, there's no more I can add -- see comments made by others about quality deterioration of VHS tapes, scratches and their effects (or lack thereof) on DVDs, and the unruly nature of Laserdisc; they're all true.

DVD has conquered VHS with stunning swiftness; much faster, indeed, than even the most optimistic industry insiders could have hoped. VHS is quickly receding to the background, good only for recording Melrose Place reruns while you're watching flicks on your DVD player. If the introduction of DVD recordable devices follows roughly the same paradigm that DVD players established with their release in 1995, you can expect to see more than reasonable prices in another three or four years.

Yeah, even deep scracthes sometimes do not effect DVDs. My Gladiator DVD has a very deep crack that was accidental and it still plays flawlessly.

You may not notice decline in your VHS quality becuase it happens so slowly but it has occurred.

At 11:28:14 PM on 12/9/2001, Mattman said:
Scratches don't usually hurt DVD unless they are very deep (and you'd hafta work at that). Secondly, VHS tape can snap, and then you're really screwed. Anyone who prefers VHS over DVD is simply misinformed.

Besides, remember when Laserdisc was said to be the next big thing? Now you can't even find them.",

Laserdisc players also costed, oh, say, around $800-$1000, and the Laserdiscs themselves were rarely under $50!, not to mention the discs themselves were huge and bulky, those are some of the reasons why it did not catch on,

DVD HAS caught on, and it is here to stay, reguardless of whether or not you see a quality decrease in your VHS movies every time you watch them it is still the same, the very playing of the tape slowly removes the magnetic coating on the tape, and eventually, it will become very visible, and many years down the road, the tape will become totally unplayable, what are you going to do then, when you have a hard-to-find VHS copy of a movie that was hard to find when it was first released, then add in about 10 years?, you are going to have a next-to-impossible tape to replace, that is what, DVD's do not decrease in quality every time, DVD is superior to VHS in every way but recordability, and that is not far off from becoming standard, you can already get DVD-R drives for the pc, however, they are expensive as hell, but the price will drop in the next few years, the next wave in DVD's are likely to be blue laser DVD's which can store many times the amount of data that current DVD's can,

P.S A DVD recordable player has been introduced into the market.

Just remember, right now a heck of a lot more people have VCR's instead of DVD players(look, not only does it take more $, it takes more letters too!). DVD's will most likely eventually replace VHS's, like CD's have done to tapes and records, but why pay more right now if we dont have to? Why not wait till prices go down cuz its not new technology. Its the same issue for me on video games, why buy a Gamecube or X-box at $200 while i am perfectly content with my N64, and even my Sega Genesis.
