ISLA NUBLAR MAP VER. 1.0 TABLE OF CONTENTS I. Official Statement II. Dinosaurs III. Park Compounds IV. Park Computer System Schedules V. Travel Facts / Information VI. Park Hours / Admission VII. Other Park Facts VIII. FAQS IX. Future Plans X. Credits & Sources / Conclusions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. OFFICIAL STATEMENT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This map of Isla Nublar is guaranteed to be over 95 percent accurate in every detail in consideration to the information provided by both the novel and film "Jurassic Park". Having read and watched JP numerous times, I invite anyone else to verify my claims and hopefully see how truly well done and accurate this map is. To my knowledge, there isn't a single flaw in the info provided by this map. Having a DVD-ROM, I was able to watch JP very closely in every detail. I was able to zoom and enhance certain frames and scenes and successfully extracted crucial info. You can test for yourself the accuracy of this map by watching the movie or reading the novel and following all the events that happen on Isla Nublar on this map. Granted, this map isn't perfect yet. Especially since the info on this map was created with this rule in mind: any info that contradicts each other between the film and novel, the film info outweighs the novel info. My primary source of info was the film and the novel was used to fill in all the gaps and areas that the film did not cover. I also used many promotional/prop type material that was created that covered extensive detail in regards to if JP was a real resort and theme park. At the time of JP's original release, that info was very exclusive and secretive. But now, I don't see why it can't be released. Finally, I invite anyone with any suggestions or comments to e-mail me at "dr.dino@jurasicpark.org". Joel Meine Dr. Dino ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. DINOSAURS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As every JP fanatic should know, at the time of the events in the original JP (Sunday, August 27, 1989), InGen had only 15 species of dinosaurs on the island and 238 dinosaurs in all. These numbers are according to the film and novel which agree with each other. However, which 15 species of dinos is different. And as I have established, the film source outweighs the novel info. Plus, since we find out that the animals are breeding the number of animals on the island does slightly change. So in the film itself, we see only seven species of dinos. The other species of dinos that must exist on the island are found out mainly from the crude tour map of the island on the inside of the official JP park brochure prop (which I own). As well as during the scene where Dennis Nedry is stealing the embryos which we see dinosaur species names printed on the embryo storage units. TYRANNOSAURUS REX > Carnivore Paddock Type 01. NOTE: Due to the extreme aggressiveness of two of the species listed here (Metriacanthosaurus & Velociraptor), temporary holding pens exist within the JP Animal Control Sub-Compound in the Visitor's Center Compound. They were constructed for observation purposes by staff before transporting animals to their final paddock enclosure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. PARK COMPOUNDS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Several compounds exsist in JP. As stated before, the existance of all these compounds is confirmed by either the film, novel, or official promotional material detailing the "what-ifs" in JP being a real theme park. Every compound is surround by 24 ft. high Electric Fencing with 10,000 volts of electricity. Each compound is highly detailed in its construction. Which is why blue prints and plans for every compound will eventually be drawn up. The magenta-colored boxes on the map indicate the locations of each compound and the approximate amount of land it takes up. At the current moment, the exact dimensions of these compounds is not established until the blue prints can be made. < VISITOR'S CENTER COMPOUND > Located on relatively flat terrain with many artificial small ponds, streams, and lush gardens. PARK COMPUTER SYSTEM SCHEDULES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The JP computer system is extremely extensive in the hundreds of automated tasks it must perform. These are only a few of those operations which I know to be true. The others will simply have to be educated guesses once the JP computer system is fully written. > Automatic feeding systems will work for 48 hours without human supervision. > Every 15 minutes, park PC system counts the dinos; an alarm is sounded within 5 minutes if an animal is missing. > The movement of the dinos across the island can be traced and is updated every 30 seconds. > All animals are tagged with radio tracking devices which allows the motion sensors to trace them. > Motion sensors cover 92% of the total island land area. Rivers and moving water account for the 8% margin of error. Some motion sensors are hard-wired while others are radio telemetered. > Regular chemical imbalance checks are performed which monitor the entire island. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V. FAQS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since this is version 1.0, I haven't actually been asked any questions regarding this map. Which is why I hope fellow JP fans will e-mail me with any questions, comments, or legitimate claims regarding the accuracy of this map. If you do have a legitimate claim regaurding the accuracy of this map which I can find no reason for refusing, I will make the change in the next version. But if it is something which I do not immediately agree with, if you can get at least five other JP fans to agree with you, I'll consider it and likely make the change in the next version. But for now, here are some questions which will explain some basic aspects of this map. Q: How did you determine the orientation of the island? A: In the very opening sequence of the original JP DVD where the camera quickly zooms in on the island from the full global view, the island is slightly tipped to the left. I took the appropriate calculations into what you see on the map. Q: How did you determine the scale of the island? A: According to the JP novel, the island is apx. 8 miles long between its northern and southern most points. Given the shape is established by the film, the rest of the calculations fall into place. Q: How did you determine the shape of the island? A: According to the JP novel, the island shape is described as being an inverted tear drop shape. Which this shape clearly does display. The film confirms this by all the satellite images of the entire island which we see on the computer monitors in the control room. The official JP / TLW:JP DVD website shows a 3D island map which confirms the same shape. That particular map even shows the approximate topography of the island which will be done on a seperate map. Another shape contrary to the one in question has been in circulation since JP's initial release in 1993. This shape has been published on all the merchandise. The above sources outweigh the merchandise. And therefore, the shape is correct. Q: How did you determine the highest point of elevation? A: According to the JP novel, the highest point of elevation is approximately 2,000 ft. Since the exact elevation can't be 2000 ft., I came up with the random value of 2,058 ft. Which could be interpreted as being apx. 2,000 ft. The location of the highest point of elevation was determined using the map on the JP / TLW:JP DVD website and a 3D map which was released by EarthWatch, Inc., the company which created all the software and 3D graphics for the JP computer system in the film. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IX. I'm working on getting all the pages scanned and published to the Internet. < CONCLUSIONS > The primary conclusion I would like to bring up is this question for JP fanatics to consider: So exactly why is this map important and why should we accept this as being the most accurate map available of Isla Nublar? First, this map is important because I hope that once all the maps are fully completed and are fully accepted by the majority of fans, we can begin the next big milestone: a complete 3D virtual world of the JP-related islands which can be fully explored without any barriers accept the ocean. By completing these maps, the foundation of such a huge project will be accomplished without debate. Myself and many JP fans included want to create this virtual world(s). Most of it is just wishful thinking since the majority of us are ordinary people lacking the skills to undertake such a huge project. Inevitably, a large group of JP fans with the proper skills must undergo this project. Or with enough convincing, a petition signed by hundreds of fans could be forwarded to Universal Pictures mentioning the grand idea of creating these virtual worlds. Of course, Universal Pictures should be persuaded to hire the aid of actual hard-core JP fanatics to verify the progress and approve of it to make sure it meets every detail. But then again, this is all just wishful thinking. I find it highly unlikely that Universal Pictures cares about doing such a thing. Perhaps on a much grander scale, these maps will still be in exsist centuries from now when simulation technology will be as real as the real thing. Like the holodeck technology in Star Trek. Who knows. If virtual worlds were created, here are some of my ideas on the different simulations we should see: > Isla Nublar 01: allows users to explore the entire island during the time the events in JP took place in August 1989; this means that many of the compounds and facilities which are on the map either didn't exsist yet or were under construction; so basically, Jurassic Park while it was still under construction. > Isla Nublar 02: allows users to explore the entire island had JP officially opened to the public and construction on all facilities and compounds were completed; users would see numerous guests on the island and people walking around; so basically, Jurassic Park after being opened to the public for several years after September 1990. > Isla Sorna 01: allows users to explore the entire island before Hurricane Clarissa wiped out all the facilities on the island; while the facilities on Site B were active and functional, employees wandering around, and had construction on all planned facilities and structures been completed; so basically, while Site B was still new and an active genetics facility prior to 1989. > Isla Sorna 02: allows users to explore the entire island after Hurricane Clarissa wiped out all the facilities on the island; when everything on the island is left in ruins, abandoned, and wrecked; so basically, the Site B which we are all used to seeing. > InGen HQ in Palo Alto, CA: allows users to explore the entire InGen HQ compound in Palo Alto, California. Shows the locations of all the laboratories, offices, financial offices, power junctions, etc. Such departments include Genetics, Human Resources, Marketing, Medical Records, Operations, Security, Systems Administration, and Research / Development. > Jurassic Park: San Diego; allows users to explore the entire Jurassic Park: San Diego zoological compound in it's completed form as if it had been opened to the public. Granted, I have not forgotten about the PC game released shortly after TLW:JP came out: Trespasser. The closest simulation we JP fans have to being engaged into the world of JP. A simulation way ahead of its years. A definite milestone. But ultimately, it isn't accurate in the exact scenes and events which we see in the movies or read in the novels. The entire island is divided into sections and levels which doesn't allow the user to explore the entire island on their own freely without pause. And as in all action/adventure and strategy games, the terrain is created to be very convenient with puzzles you must solve. Natural barriers are conveniently placed all around allowing you to only take one path. For example, in the level where you climb the mountain to reach to wind mill station, there are a series of wooden platforms and teeter- toters in your way which you must throw rocks at or shoot at to get past it. Hopefully you get my point. Such applications do not occur in real life. These proposed virtual worlds I speak of should be the first simulations where real-life problems arise in achieving your objective. Second, this is the most accruate map of Isla Nublar because if you follow the events that happen in the movie JP, it works. As well as most of the events in the novel. But granted, in doing this map, I found numerous film errors. As you can imagine, I couldn't make it so every detail fits in simply because it was a mistake made in ignorance. Here are some of those mistakes which I noticed. Many of which I believe have not been noticed before by any JP fan. 1. When the Park Drive Tour starts, we first encounter the Dilophosaurus Paddock. We see the electric fencing facing the passenger side of the vehicle, which is correct. But then, we're at the T-Rex Paddock for some reason with the electric fencing facing the driver's side of the vehicle. I regard this first encounter at the T-Rex Paddock as being a complete mistake. After the Dilophosaurus Paddock, we should be at the Triceratops Paddock. Which we soon eventually do. Unfortunately, when Dr. Grant abruptly leaps out of the vehicle, he gets out on the driver's side which is another mistake. 2. When the tour vehicles return back to the T-Rex Paddock, the electric fencing is facing the passenger side of the vehicle. Apparently the tour vehicles are capable of turning themselves around. At this time, we clearly see the goat behind the fence on level ground all around. But later during the T-Rex attack when Dr. Grant and Lex are cornered by the T-Rex, they both climb up onto the concrete foundation where on the other side is just a huge wall that just drops straight down. For some reason the terrain turned from relatively flat, level ground to a huge concrete wall cliff. 3. Here is the Dennis Nedry escape story. We start at the Visitor's Center taking the tour road east through the Main Gate. Correct so far. Then he approaches another gate which allows him to pass through the electric fence. Correct again. He then sees a sign for the East Dock telling him to turn left. He crashes into the sign not remembering which way it said to turn. The sign direction is correct and despite not remembering what the direction was, Nedry makes a lucky break and turns left. Correct again. Nedry then crashes again into a small white fence. He gets out and finds another sign which says to drive straight. But he is on a small hill platform above the actual road. Nedry walks down this small hill and goes up to a large tree to tie a steel cable. As he walks back to the car, he passes by the sign again which now says to turn left. A definite mistake. To my knowledge, these are the only details which I could not compensate for on this map. If anyone can think of a way to do so, please let me hear your suggestion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I believe that covers everything. I hope I didn't leave anything out. Again, if anyone has any questions, comments, or legitimate additions or claims, please e-mail me at: dr.dino@jurassicpark.org. I hope you enjoy using this map and having access to it. So until the next version, (assuming of course there is a next version) have a wonderful day at Jurassic Park!
